“You are not used to miracle-minded thinking, but you can be trained to think that way.” (T-2.VII.1:9)
I believe that through A Course in Miracles, I am being trained to be able to handle the tough times of this dream in which I find myself. I have been studying the Course for decades and have always felt a strong attraction to its teachings. But many times over the years I found myself questioning if I ever will be able to think with the Christ Mind.
Will I be able to see all my brothers — every body — as an innocent Son of God?
Will I understand that everything in the world of form is an illusion?
Will I ever fully recognize that my spiritual thoughts and my ego thoughts are creating and making the world I see?
Can I consistently learn to choose the Holy Spirit and let go of my fear?
At my best, I say, “Why Not?” I have a spiritual path that says, “I can.”
We are being taught that our minds have the ability to know the Higher Self that lies within us as the truth.
“Deep in your mind the holy Christ in you is waiting your acknowledgment as you.” (W-110.9:4)

(This article was inspired by POL Course 910: Living in the World While Waking Up.)
A Course in Miracles tells us we are living in a dream of our own making — and that illusion cannot impact or hurt the true Self, the eternal Self. That’s a difficult idea to embrace when we are faced with the daily challenges of life — getting stuck in traffic and arriving late to work, coming down with a cold and feeling miserable, arguing with a partner, or being hit with unexpected expenses and circumstances that make our experience feel chaotic and random.
In Workbook Lesson 135, my favorite lesson, we are told: “You operate from the belief you must protect yourself from what is happening because it must contain what threatens you.” (ACIM W-135.2:1)
Of course, I feel the need to prepare for the unexpected — sometimes even the worst — when I’m relying on my own strength and my own understanding of this world. Jesus says, “The world is based on this insane belief.” (W-135.2:3)
We seem to lurch from one threat to the next without logic or warning: a job loss, a serious illness in the family, a costly car repair. It feels like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole. How do we prepare for the next emergency?
And yet we are told: “…no one walks the world in armature but must have terror striking at his heart.” (W-135.2:5)

A Course in Miracles is a profound spiritual teaching, designed to shift our perception from fear to love. But the journey doesn’t really begin until we embody its teachings.
Embodying the Course means moving beyond intellectual understanding and actively living its principles… especially forgiveness, love, non-judgement, and inner peace in our daily life. When we do that they become the foundation of how we think, perceive, relate to others, and respond in every moment. The Course taken deeply becomes experiential, realised through consistent inner work. While daily lessons and the text are vital, embodiment begins when we move from studying the course to practicing it in our daily lives.
When we embody A Course in Miracles in our life, we experience a shift in perception in everyday moments, and our mind shifts from fear to love.

Forgiveness guides us to overlook the world of separation to experience our oneness with our Creator and every brother. We willingly shed our judgments in favor of seeing the truth and blessing our brothers. As we welcome the Holy Spirit, we are safely led out of the dream of separation to find the eternal Love that has always been ours.
“Forgiveness is the Holy Spirit’s great learning aid in bringing this thought reversal about. …As we learn to recognize our perceptual errors, we also learn to look past them or “forgive.” At the same time we are forgiving ourselves, looking past our distorted self-concepts to the Self That God created in us and as us.” (ACIM Preface, xi)
The ego fantasy is that we have succeeded in separating from our Creator. From this wish, a whole universe of fantasies comes forth. Being dependent on these dream fantasies of separation for its existence, the ego never questions its choice of being unique and special. Rather, it always seeks to make the false idea of separation from God more real. The ego’s plan for forgiveness is to first believe that something has happened and then tries to disregard it or put it out of awareness to hold the illusion of separation from God in place.

My ACIM study group has been reading about the little willingness, and as happens often, it is like I have never read it before. It’s not new information, but it hits me differently this time. It begins by telling us that the holy instant is the result of our determination to be holy. It reminds us that only our willingness is needed, and in fact, to do more will interfere with the Holy Spirit’s part.
I used to wonder how it was that I interfered, but that was because I just couldn’t believe that my desire for awakening was enough. Surely, I had a lot of work to do. I couldn’t just sit back and expect the miracle to awaken me. It felt irresponsible of me to do less. Now I see that this was just the ego trying to stay in the game.
In reality, doing less is precisely what I am to do. For example, when I feel afraid, I know it is because I am holding onto the past. I tried to think of a fear that isn’t about the past, but I couldn’t find one. I wasted time yesterday, and this morning I regretted it. Why? Because in the past, I’ve run out of time to finish all my tasks, and so I fear it will happen again. If I accept that the past is gone and focus only on the present, I would have simply enjoyed the moment, and now I would have no regrets — only a pleasant feeling.

I have been thinking about “sickness” and how it is one of the sneakiest tools in the ego’s arsenal for attack. Why? Because sickness tries to persuade me that I am a body and separate from everyone else.
About five years after I started studying A Course in Miracles, I became very, very ill. I was told to get my affairs in order because it was likely I that I did not have long to live.
Lying in the MRI machine for the first time, I heard the banging noises and kept very still. Suddenly, I felt an otherworldly light envelop me and heard a question: “Do you want to come home now?”
My initial reaction was one of relief and gratitude: I had been so sick that my days were almost unbearable. I wanted so badly to leave this body behind. I remembered, too, that, “I am not a body.” (W-199-220) and that I had dedicated myself to living the prayer, “I am here only to be truly helpful. I am here to represent Him Who sent me.” (T-2.V.A.18:2-3)
