Thoughts of Love and Being Present

Loving thoughts are the only thoughts that are real and true. They point the way to the experience of Love Itself. They are reminders of who we are. They can only be experienced in this present moment. Loving thoughts, being real, do not exist in the past or future because there is no past or future, only the Eternal Now.

When I find myself moving away from the present moment, I also find myself not thinking loving thoughts. The course teaches us that only loving thoughts are real, so therefore when I am not present and not thinking loving thoughts, I am actually not thinking at all. These thoughts may at times seem to be more “positive” or “negative” thoughts, but if they are not rooted in the now (meaning I am totally unaware of my thinking and just letting the “monkey mind” go wild and not being present) they are not real.

Love can only be experienced in this moment. Forgiveness and miracles can only happen now. I sometimes find myself thinking “later on I will work with Holy Spirit on forgiving this.” But healing can only occur in the present, not in the future. Am I willing to be present and experience myself as I truly Am right now? Am I willing to receive and extend miracles now?

I can only hear the Voice for God, the Voice of Love, speak to me and through me in this present moment. This is “presence in the present.” I can only serve the Awakening of the Sonship by first being present in the now.

Through this present moment awareness my mind becomes still and quiet. Peace is the experience I have when my mind is still and quiet. This is experiencing God. The Course says, “This Holy Instant Is Salvation Come.” My salvation comes from being present, being willing to have my mind healed and allowing Holy Spirit to work through me for the salvation of the world.

Lesson 308 in the Workbook for Students (titled “This Instant Is the Only Time There Is”) has a prayer that says, “Thank you for this instant, Father. It is now I am redeemed. This instant is the time You have appointed for Your Son’s release, and for salvation of the world in him.”

A Story About Love

There was once a boy named Barret. Barret was a happy boy, at least that’s how he remembers himself. The times of sadness, envy bitterness and unfulfilled plans had receded into the dim recesses of time, easily outshone by memories of happiness that were not the only thing he experienced. His illusory past of ‘only happiness’ served well his desire to feel diminished by the circumstances in his life currently. How could now not feel less than ideal when an imaginary idyllic childhood stays in the background, overshadowing the ideas he had about his life? When Barret allowed himself to see how he used his past as a shield against experiencing the happiness under the fear, the importance that he had given it became less pressing.

As this pressure falls away, love is revealed in its unchanging perfection. How could this be? Wasn’t love the thing he had with his mother? He always said, “I love you,” and she always said it back to him — he had thought that that for sure was it. Yet he didn’t feel that way with everyone. He had left many out. This new awareness, this joining, was not limited to just one. It excluded no one, for it recognized this allness lies in us all, and would be incomplete without just one of us.

I promised you a story about love, and it seems to me that it is just beginning to be told — a story of how we each have taken something all-encompassing, unending, limitless, and pretended that we could attach it to a particular thing which may be a situation, a memory, a finite something, thinking that it would somehow have the same meaning for us. But only wholeness can be whole, in spite of our pointless attempts to celebrate things other than that.

Of the many different experiences and things that have been dubbed ‘love,’ there is almost always some sort of limit or noninclusiveness in their description. Sometimes the term ‘unconditional love’ is discussed as well, but generally in terms of experiencing it with a specific person and not everyone. How could this really be unconditional? Applying it to one person only strikes me as a big condition!

How could love be anything other than whole, if separation is an inherent part of loneliness, withdrawal and lack? A loving Creator would not consider any of these to be a part of love. And we are indeed blessed with a loving Creator. Only the ego’s idea of love, which is dubbed ‘special love’ in the Course, could attempt to join such opposing ideas and keep a straight face.

As Jesus counsels us in the Course, “Try to believe, however briefly, that nothing can harm you in any way.” These words sound nice, but we generally aren’t willing to consider that nothing can really harm us. It doesn’t make sense in our world, since we have adopted a perspective of fragility, mortality and susceptibility to our inner demons seemingly displayed outside of us. There are things outside of us that want to hurt us, or so we think, yet this illusion plays right into the ego’s special love.

We can begin to look at the characteristics of what we call love to see what we hold true. Is it given in peace or is it mixed with fear? “There is no fear in love for love is guiltless.” (T-13.X.10:4) Is there a certainty of your innocence in it? For “Love holds no grievances.” (W-pI.68)

This, then, is our task — to be willing to bring our concepts of love to the light of Jesus’s gentle vision. There need be no worry or concern about this process, for “Nothing real can be threatened.” Any false concepts about love will merely slip from our separated mind and be no more, since they weren’t really there to begin with. And all that is true about our experience of love cannot leave us in truth and will shine ever more brightly without our mistaken ideas about it blocking its free extension.

So, to return to our story, what’s going to happen with Barret? Does everything work out for him? Will he come to remember the love he truly is? These are good questions, and the answers to them may not have happened yet, but I can tell you for sure the answer to the last one is unequivocally ‘Yes!’

Transition

As you may know, in November of 2007, we received guidance that Pathways of Light was to move to Florida. Many steps needed to happen for that transition to occur. The residence was renovated and the property has been listed for sale. While the property is still for sale, we have taken another step toward following through on the guidance from Spirit.

Thanks to a donation from a benefactor, we have been able to rent a home in St. Cloud, Florida (south of the Orlando airport) where Robert and Mary could move with all the production equipment and computers that are used to produce course materials, catalogs, Miracles News magazines, CD’s and DVD’s etc. Meanwhile, Rev. Sharyn Zenz continues to manage the Pathways of Light office in Wisconsin, where she does the bookkeeping, answers the phone, receives Internet and telephone orders, ships them, interacts with Pathways students and ministers and responds to many inquiries that come in by phone and e-mail. We are very grateful for Sharyn’s continued dedication to serving our awakening to the one Self we all share. She will be joining with Rev. Larry Glenz to present a two-day experiential workshop based on The Book ON… on June 13-14 at the Pathways of Light Center in Kiel, Wisconsin. (See page 5.) It will be an event you’ll want to attend.

We (Mary & Robert) arrived here in Florida on February 1st with the help of Jim and Diana Klapperich, who drove the large U-Haul truck while we followed in the Pathways van. It was a wonderful, miracle-filled journey which filled us with gratitude. Since we have been here, there has been much to do to get settled and back into functioning in the roles Spirit has given us with Pathways. Just three weeks after arriving in Florida, we headed off to San Francisco to be part of the International ACIM Conference that we co-sponsored.

Over 400 people from around the world attended and it was a peaceful, joyous joining of brothers and sisters sharing our journey Home to our true Self. We had the opportunity to share our workshop with the entire group. It was a joint experience of flowing with the river of peace as we talked about our own process of letting go and letting God, which opens us to the experience of our grandeur in God.

Sharyn Zenz along with Rev. Ken Gorman orchestrated a wonderful grand reunion dinner that filled the entire Mandarin restaurant, located just a few blocks from the hotel. We met new and old friends and enjoyed a wonderful gourmet, multi-course dinner. Ken and Sharyn also organized a tour bus that took over 40 ACIM students on a three hour tour of San Francisco. We thank them for their part in making the San Francisco ACIM Conference experience a happy joining.

We made many contacts at the conference. One was with a workshop presenter, Carol Howe, whom we learned lives just north of Orlando. Carol was a close friend and confidant of Bill Thetford, and is now writing a biography of his life. She draws upon her own experience as well as many interviews of key people who knew Bill well.

In the book she describes Bill’s journey with A Course in Miracles that led to his awakening shortly before his transition. The book is expected to be published in the next few months and we will offer it on our web site as soon as it is available. We talked with Carol about sponsoring a workshop around her experience with Bill and the book. Once we get closer to the publication date, we will announce the details of the upcoming workshop.

Among the people we connected with about future workshops in Orlando were Jon Mundy and Nouk Sanchez and Tomas Vieira (authors of Take Me to Truth). We also met with Rev. Mary Gerard Lenihan and John Hutkin, who are publishers of The Book ON, The Mentor Within and a new book coming out by Mary Gerard, which is Visions of Illumination. (See interview on page 3.) We are planning to sponsor them with their new workshop titled, WNYHOO—NOW (World Needs Your Help One-to-One — NOW) sometime next fall or winter here in Florida.

Since our return from San Francisco, we have taken further steps toward getting our facilities here in Florida organized to serve more efficiently. It has been a learning process as we learn how to work with two offices 1,300 miles apart. E-mail and unlimited long distance phone service helps. We have a little more refining to do as we move equipment to different rooms to improve the work flow and use of space. This is giving us time to get familiar with the community and the resources we have available to us. This time will help us be better prepared to move forward with establishing permanent facilities here after the property in Wisconsin sells.

Other BIG NEWS: Beginning with the January 2009 issue, the articles in Miracles News magazine will be available free on our web site. This will make it easier for many more people to be inspired by the wonderful articles of mind healing and miracles. You will be able e-mail articles you enjoy to your friends.

There also will soon be a new section on the web site where the Pathways staff will share the inspiration they receive as they practice Following Holy Spirit’s Lead.

As we become as little children who have lost their way and remember that we know nothing, we will be willing to take Holy Spirit’s hand and join with each other in returning Home to the awareness of Where we are always. Blessings to all.
