Littleness versus Magnitude

“Holy child of God, when will you learn that only holiness can content you and give you peace? Remember that you learn not for yourself alone, no more than I did. It is because I learned for you that you can learn of me. I would but teach you what is yours, so that together we can replace the shabby littleness that binds the host of God to guilt and weakness with the glad awareness of the glory that is in him. My birth in you is your awakening to grandeur. Welcome me not into a manger, but into the altar to holiness, where holiness abides in perfect peace. My Kingdom is not of this world because it is in you. And you are of your Father. Let us join in honoring you, who must remain forever beyond littleness.” (T-15.III.9)

Journal

This entire section is trying to awaken us to our glory. Nearly everyone on the earth thinks of himself/herself as alone, small, and fragile. This is not who we are. This body/personality self is an idea projected outward. It is an opportunity to play-act something that cannot happen in reality, like a child playing at being Batman or Superman.

Jesus is inviting us to remember that we are only play-acting this character and that, in reality, we are part of God, exactly like God in every way. In Lesson 326, Jesus says this about us as part of a beautiful prayer.

I am forever Your Effect, and You forever and forever are my Cause. As You created me I have remained. Where You established me I still abide. And all Your attributes abide in me, because it is Your Will to have a Son so like his Cause that Cause and Its Effect are indistinguishable.

Does this sound like the self you are presently identified with? In our unity, we are exactly like God, indistinguishable from God.

And now Jesus is telling us that he is here with us right now, and he is with us to teach us to awaken us to our birthright. He is here to help us to accept our holiness and our grandeur. He says we can have this awareness when we stop clinging to our guilt and our littleness. All day today I have committed to living as if this were done. When I start to feel some concern for time or circumstance, I stop and rest a moment in God and remember that today I am living as an awakened Christ. I question if this is the response of an awakened being. It is going to be great fun!

Jesus says, “My birth in you is your awakening to grandeur.” Of course, he is not saying that the man, Jesus, is birthed in us, but as the Christ, He is born in us and awakens us to grandeur. He goes on to say that his Kingdom is not of the world but is in us. In us! We are the Kingdom! So, yes, we remain far beyond the little self we pretend to be. Let us welcome our destiny and accept it now. Let us throw off guilt and with it fear and be the Divine Beings we were created. Now, this warrants a celebration of Thanksgiving!

Why Do Affirmations?

Okay, I can hear you saying: “Why should I do mirror affirmations? It really seems silly. And say them out loud? Even more preposterous! Anyway, aren’t affirmations pretty ‘Sixties’? No one does that anymore! I am a modern person. I don’t need those affirmations and affirmations that go with the ACIM lessons are really a step too far. I will just read the lessons and, Barbara, even if I have your book, I will just read the affirmations when I read my daily lesson.”

My answer to you is that I understand where you are coming from and what you are saying, but there may be nothing more powerful than looking yourself in the mirror and saying out loud: “I am the holy child of God.”

What if whatever image you think of as Holy Spirit, (i.e. Jesus, Mother Mary, your higher Self, etc.) what if this image appeared in form right in front of you, looked you straight in your eyes and said: “( name ), you are the holy, innocent child of God. God wants you to know this indisputable fact and He has sent me here to tell it to you personally.” Can you imagine how powerful that would be? Would you believe Him/Her? Would it change your belief about yourself forever? I think so!

And so, dear one, when you look in the mirror straight into your own eyes, that is exactly what you are doing. Your higher, holy Self is telling you who you really are. You are the form of the Holy Spirit that God has sent to give you the message (and everyone else on earth as well)! In the Course Jesus says: “You are my voice, my eyes, my feet, my hands through which I save the world. The Self from which I call to you is but your own.” (W-pI.R-V.9:3-4)

I hope you won’t think I am writing this just to sell more books. I am actually posting the affirmations for Monday through Friday’s lessons for free on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/barbaragoodmansiegel/. I was guided to start posting the affirmations for free because it does absolutely no one any good if I was guided to spend three years putting the book together along with ACIM Text quotes that reflect what the lesson teaches and no one knows about it. So here it is. Your ego may resist this powerful tool, so give it an honest trial time and see if doing the affirmations actually takes your intellectual knowledge of the lessons and carries their beautiful messages from your head down into your heart.

We Don’t Need Love

I was preparing for my trip to see the folks in Florida. Joyful! Joyful! I spent the day before I left with my beautiful granddaughter. We often draw, paint, or make things together and as we do, we talk. She shares about her friends or school and I share some of the lessons/gifts I have learned on my spiritual journey.  

I had the idea of making valentine cards for each other. It started with hearts and border designs in pinks and purples. She likes to draw cats and dogs. She drew us standing next to each other with big smiles and birdies flying around us. Singing, of course.  

The message that came to me is a version of a Beatles song that I love so dearly. I have sang my own version of it many times. I think the Beatles would have evolved to this version if they had A Course in Miracles in the early 60’s. So I wrote my version which is, “ All we are is Love” inside my card to her.

When my granddaughter saw this she said, “Aren’t the words, “All we need is love?” I said, “We don’t need love because we are love.”

Oh! She was thinking it over as Spirit was helping me restate the idea in a fun way. I played around with different ways to say it. Spirit said, “We don’t need love, cuz we BE Love!” She also wrote it in her own words on her card for me: we dont nid love cas we are love. She is six. She is eternal. She is my joy coach. She is pure Love. 

Now I look at my beautiful Valentine card every day, reminding me of the Truth. All we are is Love, Love. Love is all we are.

Why Me God?

I ask myself this all the time. Why me? What is so holy about me that He has given me what so many others lack? What have I done of any real good that entitles me to miracles? His miracles.

I’ve known, from the moment I first opened A Course in Miracles that the words were already resonating within me even as I read the first principle of miracles, “There is no order of difficulty in miracles.” 

Since that day fifteen years ago, things began to change in my life. I had studied other spiritual philosophies, religions and twelve-step programs.

I come from a distinctly traumatic family background that dog-whipped me out of the horrible safety of my childhood in a way that no child should ever have to experience. I was completely on my own at the age of seventeen — no parents; basically just an orphan. I had to fend for myself. So I did. And in fending for myself I learned a great and unforgiving lesson — God was punishing me. I never questioned it. I survived as best I could and in ways that I sometimes look back on with sadness and regret. 

Twenty-three years and five different therapists later I found the Course. Or, perhaps I should say, it found me. I’ve heard people say that “Religion is for people who are afraid of going to hell; spirituality is for people that have already been there.” And since I was, I believe, in the kind of hell this quote talks about, I had nowhere else to go. I belonged…nowhere.

So…yes! I do believe the Course found me. That was the first miracle. I was “found.” And since I had nowhere to go, I started dabbling with the lessons in the Course. I found myself understanding, for the first time in my cursed life, that what I was reading in this holy text was exactly how I felt growing up as a child; even well before I slipped through the cracks of a broken home and became lost to the rest of the world. I remember that nothing in my childhood world made sense. Good things happened to criminals while tragedy visited itself upon the kindest souls.

I realized, as I continued to be drawn in by the lessons in the Course, always being the child that asked, “Why?” I asked why animals didn’t have souls like us? I wondered why the death of my father was “final.” I was told I would never hear from him or see him again. I asked, “Why not?” I was told that God, “...took him to Heaven.” I retorted with, ”Who says so! Why was it God that took my family? Why wasn’t it the devil instead?” I was forever the “why” child. 

A Course in Miracles has saved me from living in that hell I used to call me. It’s answered every question I ever had about life. It has explained every “why” I ever imagined. It has made me a softer, kinder version of my highest self. It helped the “why” child become the “how can I help?” Spirit. I don’t need to ask “why” anymore. The Course has taught me how to live as comfortably in the question today as I do in the answer.

The Course is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The most fundamental, saving grace gift of the Course for me has been the gift from the Course of knowing that there is no such thing as a punishing God. I know today that God doesn’t do bad things. People do, or rather, they error. And I absolutely know, without hesitation or doubt, that had I not been given this knowledge from day one of reading the Course that I would never have opened the book again. To know, today, that my God and Holy Spirit want nothing but pure happiness for me has endowed me with the will to live to give.

I’ve had a thousand holy instants and a million miracles bestowed upon me. At night, before I go to sleep, I thank God, not only for the miracles I witnessed that day, but more so for the miracles that I didn’t witness — the miracles I didn’t see that day. Miracles are always happening in my life. There is no order of difficulty in miracles.

I cannot explain the Course. I can only do it. If you are new to the material, please give yourself the divine gift of just sticking with it. It is God’s offering to you, through the Holy Spirit. You will see, I promise. Today, I still sometimes wonder, “Why me?” Why am I so lucky to have this Course — I honestly believe it’s not really about me anymore. The hell that was me is now the one simply wanting to be of service on Holy Spirit’s behalf.

THAT’S “Why me!”
