Holy Spirit, Why Am I Doing This?

As a Pathways of Light ministerial candidate, I am currently working on Course 112: Knowing Your True Purpose with Rev. Maria Felipe. In this course, one of the assignments is to ask Holy Spirit a question, and write down the answer received. When I got to this assignment, I listened within for what I needed to ask and was surprised when this came up: Why am I doing this? Why am I taking these Pathways of Light courses? Why am I doing A Course in Miracles? What is my true focus? What is the practice I should commit to?

Though I felt sheepish asking these questions, Holy Spirit answered them in His reassuring, gentle way. His answers reinforced my faith, assured me that I was on the right path, and encouraged me to keep going. He reoriented me to my true purpose: Connecting with Him.

When I read Holy Spirit’s response to Rev. Maria, she said that it needed to be shared, that it was for all of us, not just me. She encouraged me to submit this to Miracles News, which connects me to another aspect of my true purpose: Extending Love.

It is a joy to share this answer, and I hope it helps you on your path as much as it helped (and continues to help) me!

“Do not be afraid. You are doing well. You ask Me why you are doing this. The answer is happiness. You feel selfish, but happiness is God’s Will for you, so you’re simply in alignment with Him.

You feel lost in words and concepts. Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid if you feel you don’t understand something. What matters most is this — this connection. All your life, it has been Me you were looking for. We can maintain this connection all day long. We can heal all day long. You just have to notice if you’re not at peace and come back. Relax and come back. Always I am here, welcoming you. Call on Me anytime, do not be afraid. I live to be with you.

Words have come to you again and again — choose peace first. It scares you. You think it’s too simple. Peace is your natural state when you’re with Me, and it is the state that helps you remain aware of Me. In every situation, relax and remember that you could see peace instead of this. Relax, and hand over feelings of unrest or fear or stress. Hand it over and trust. You only need to say, ‘Holy Spirit, I give this situation to you and I trust.’ It is simple. Smile. I am here, and I love you.”

If I sit still and listen, the answer always comes. Even when it comes as if it were a tutorial.

I had begun this day with a concern. My concern was with a friend, who had taken a fall, and on, and on.­­.. I had no control — not that I wanted any — over the outcome. I was in a bit of distress and spoke directly to Holy Spirit. As Always, “Holy Spirit, please direct me in this. I will go where I am led. I will do what I am led to do. I will say what I am led to say. Please bring me to Peace.” And, instantly, the above words came. I immediately went to Forgiveness. This took all of about two minutes when I hung up the phone from my friend’s niece.

I am very quick to advise others to “close the history book” when faced with a perceived dilemma. I chose to open my history book concerning my friend and began shaking my head over her actions and my perception of the outcome of those actions. Well! How quickly I forgot my own words. However, I did remember I could choose again, and I chose Holy Spirit.

I called her niece back and offered any support she might need, in any area. I suggested she make a list of any questions and concerns, when she knew more. We set up a tentative date to have an in person meeting to address all of this.

I am sitting here thinking of how many other observations I could have made today — from my history book — had I not chosen to walk with Holy Spirit. The opportunities for Forgiveness present themselves over and over again in a never ending stream, on a daily basis.

I walk in Peace, not chaos.

How Can We All Get Along?

When we incarnate into this earthly existence, it becomes our nature to fight with each other, attack, discriminate and disregard those that we associate with every day. It isn’t uncommon to have a smile on our faces while, under the mask, we are seething. If we are all the “Son Of God,” how can we be so cruel to each other?

From the time we are small children, fighting with our siblings and throughout our lives with our classmates and then spouses and others, we seem to have continuous strife with our brethren. So why do we seem so compelled to continue to manifest war in our lives?

A Course in Miracles tells us that, because we believe we separated from God, we believe we deserve to be punished.

“The ego is the part of the mind that believes in division. How could part of God detach itself without believing it is attacking Him? We spoke before of the authority problem as based on the concept of usurping God’s power. The ego believes that this is what you did because it believes it is you. If you identify with ego, you must perceive yourself as guilty.” (T-5.V.3:1-5)

And the truth also is the ego doesn’t want to acknowledge God’s Love for us. To the ego, Love means defeat and annihilation.

“Your fear of attack is nothing compared to your fear of Love. You would be willing to look even upon your savage wish to kill God’s Son, if you did not believe that it saves you from love. For this wish caused the separation, and you have protected it because you do not want the separation healed. …For still deeper than the ego’s foundation, and much stronger than it will ever be, is your intense and burning Love for God, and His for you. This is what you really want to hide.” (T-13.III.2:3-5,8-9)

We set ourselves up early on in life. By identifying with a tiny thought that we were separate and powerful on our own, we began a journey of self-contempt, projection and retaliation. In this journey we lost our one, true Self. The ego thinks of itself as God. It feels that Love is weakness and hate is strength, so when we identify any sign of weakness in our brother, we attack to gain power for ourself.

Lucky for us we are all safe in the mind of God and He has left us a clear pathway back to our Home. Through our connection with Holy Spirit, we are taught to see past the illusions that we created.

When we feel insulted by someone, we can ask Holy Spirit what needs to be healed in our own mind. So if I get in an argument with a neighbor or a friend felt I had insulted them, or if I get insulted for some reason, this is an indication that there is something that needs to be healed in me. So then I can take it to Holy Spirit for healing. When we remember that in God there is nothing else, we will realize there is no room for anything else but peace.

The ego thought system is so terrified that it will be rendered helpless in the presence of God. With the ego, we believe that God’s Love would crush us, but in truth it will make us whole. I have learned there is no peace without the Love of God, because without God we are left to our own devices, where hate and guilt and chaos reside.

In lesson 183 of the Workbook for Students it says, “God’s name is holy, but no more holier than yours. To call upon His name is but to call upon your own. A father gives his son his name, and thus identifies the son with him. His brothers share his name, and thus are united in a bond to which they turn for their identity. Your Father’s Name reminds you who you are, even within a world that does not know; even though you have remembered it.” (W-pI.183.1:1-5)

Therefore, it is our job to see that we can remember the truth for our brothers until they can remember for themselves. This is how we all begin to get along, holding the Light for each other. For me it is a daily walk, taking time in my day to remember not to judge anyone else, to accept them wherever they are on the path. We will all find our way home. God forgets no one. We all heal together. ❦

Where Am I Putting My Faith?

I am currently studying the Pathways of Light Ministers Courses. I was working on course 901: Introduction to Miracles Practice at the time I participated in a call with Robert and Mary and other pathways ministers. Mary suggested we write down the following quote, and ask Holy Spirit how we can apply this in our lives:

“Put all your faith in the Love of God within you; eternal, changeless and forever unfailing. This is the answer to whatever confronts you today.” (W-p1.4:3-4)

I sat in silence asking Holy Spirit what this meant for me.

What was confronting me that day was chronic pain from fibromyalgia and arthritis. Some days are good and some are not so very good.

The answer I received was that my physical pain was really a cover for worry and anxiety, which has deep roots in my thought system, not in my body. Those roots are like tendrils and they wind through my day in my body parts like heavy energy beams. This energy is magnetic energy attracting particles in my mind forming a picture at a cellular level that I call physical pain to explain my emotional state to myself.

This label called, “pain” also justifies to me my avoidance of others because I do not spend much time with other people anymore. I tell myself this is due to physical pain but Holy Spirit had me see that’s not putting my “faith in the love of God within me” as it says above in our meditation. Staying away from others while feeling pain is an attack on others but Holy Spirit cautioned me here, saying tread gently, be gentle with yourself… no judgments. Focus not on judgment but on the love of God within me as this meditation says.

I realized that rather than focus on the love of God within me I have been focusing on my solutions. My solutions are physical remedies such as vitamins, acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopaths, doctors and dozens of books on healing with dozens more solutions. All these remedies lead to more and more solutions. These solutions lead to other problems such as when some vitamins give me acid stomach then I need a remedy for that. My solutions also lead to problems such as the cost of the natural doctors leading to bills that cause more anxiety.

Holy Spirit had me see that this is all mental machinery. This mental machinery is composed of my own thoughts and it is a self-perpetuating machine. My thoughts glide and slide through the gears of my machine from problem to solution to another problem and another solution and this thought machinery has never resolved the issue of physical pain one iota.

I had a visual of this mental machinery in another way. I saw how my mind is building a wall using that machinery to lift thoughts that are like flat stones. One problem is a stone and I lay that stone in the wall, then my machinery lifts another solution and lays another stone beside it, then another problem is lifted onto another stone and soon the wall is looming higher and higher.

Now the wall needs to have those spaces between them filled in with anxieties, more thoughts lifting buckets of sand sized thoughts about physical pain and physical solutions or trying to figure out the cause of the physical pain or what pill caused what.

Then those spaces grow tendrils of related thoughts like feeling judged, judging others because I feel they are judging me about being in chronic pain and now I have a solid wall of thoughts the are as solid as rocks, but it is all made from this mental machinery that I operate. This wall blocks the light rays from the Love of God just like the darkest cloud before a storm would block the sun.

Holy Spirit says the answer today is the above meditation. Put all my faith in the Love of God within me. That Love is eternal, that Love is changeless, and forever unfailing. God’s Love is the answer for whatever confronts me today.

How could I possible compare my constantly changing solutions based on the anxiety spitting out from my perpetually grinding mental machinery.

My ego mind created the problems so how could my ego mind resolve them? As the course states the purpose of the ego is to “seek but do not find.” The only way to overcome the ego mind is living and thinking with all my faith in the Love of God that is within me. Yes, the Love of God is within me. 

This meditation changed my life. I have not gone back into that mental machinery since that day. My gratitude is immense. I feel blessed to have found these Pathways of Light courses. Thank you Robert and Mary. I am eternally grateful.
