Ownership

by Rev. Maura Williams, O.M.C.

Rev. Marua WilliamsRecently I had one of the most empowering insights I’ve had in quite a long time. I brought my pastor, Rev. John Vise, a copy of something I’d written for his feedback. He carefully read the words I’d written and quietly looked up at me and said, “Stop taking ownership of the ego.” He then used a highlighter and marked all the times I’d used the word “my” in reference to the ego. I had never noticed myself doing this, and had never thought about the implications of taking ownership of the ego.

When we take ownership of something, we believe we are responsible for it. It’s ours and we have to take care of it. The care and feeding of an ego is impossible. It has a voracious appetite for drama and is never, ever full. It always wants to see more sin, feel more guilt and feel more fear. In this way it proves that it is right and God is wrong.

Authentic Prayer — The Kind of Prayer That Works

by Rev. Joseph Wolfe, O.M.C.

Rev. Joe WolfeI never really understood what genuine prayer really is. I used to think that to pray involved some measure of reverence — getting down on my knees and begging for some thing or some circumstance. Sometimes, though rarely, that kind of praying actually seemed to be effective, but most of the time I felt that I’d get better results beating on a dead horse. Usually for me prayer was a one way conversation, a plea or wish for something I thought I needed, something I wanted but didn’t have or a situation that I perceived would ‘make everything better’ if fulfilled.

Growing up, I observed many others praying in the same manner. From members of my family, to schoolmates and even entire church congregations, I saw what I perceived as the normal method of praying which was begging for stuff.

I went through many periods of time when I was downright angry and frustrated with praying. For the most part it didn’t seem to work. Many questions came up like who was I praying to and did “He” hear me or was “He” deliberately ignoring me? Did I do something to anger “Him” to the point that I was somehow unworthy of any answers to my prayers?

While at the same time sharing that peace
with those in my immediate vicinity, my village,
my city, my province, my country.
Understanding there are no separate places,

I allow Love and Peace to flow through
me to all people and all situations. Love
blankets everyone, everywhere. It flows across

My Trip to Fantasy Land

by Rev. Linda Wisniewski, O.M.C.

Rev. Linda WisniewskiLike all stories in the dream world of fantasy, this story of my trip to Disney World has a beginning, middle, and an end. And like all stories in the dream, it offers many opportunities for forgiveness that lead to awakening from the dream.

Beginning: My family which consists of my husband, two daughters, one son-in-law and 3 grandchildren ages 16, 12 and 10, went on a vacation to Disney World and Universal Studios in Florida for eight days. Everyone but me loves vacationing at Disney World. The 10 year old never was there and we all promised her that for her 10th birthday, she would get to go there. I used to look forward to vacations, but now I look forward to being in stillness and resting in God. So, I was not looking forward to this trip. In fact, I was dreading it. I was also dreading that I would be in a wheel chair because since I broke my hip a year ago, I knew I wouldn’t be able to walk the distances that Disney World and Universal Studios required.

Help to Change Our Mind

by Rev. Susan Smith, O.M.C.

Rev. Susan Smith“The patient [brother] must be helped to change his mind about the ‘reality’ of illusions.” (P.Int.1:8)

I have found most recently that I was drawn into a circle of “emotional disturbances” and I think that most of us can say that from time to time we get drawn into these circumstances that take our Peace away. Following is what I find to be most helpful when I find myself drawn into these emotional disturbances.

The Real Life

by Rev. Trish Kearns, O.M.C.

Rev. Trish Kearns“God is the Light in Which I See.” (ACIM W-44)

I am in the process of working through Pathways of Light ACIM Practitioner course 908: Abundance Awareness. Part of this course has us review Lesson 44. After revisiting this Lesson for many days now, I am experiencing more and more of what this lesson means. I had recently found myself going into deep levels of despair and depression, from what I consider to be a state of limbo.  My telecommuting job seems to be done in the illusion; however I have not heard from Holy Spirit that it is time to resign.  Since making the decision to sell my Colorado home and move to Florida, my job responsibilities have grown ten-fold. I find myself working many days 10-15 hours without a break. I have been feeling very overwhelmed and confused about all this.

Trusting I Am in Good Hands

by Rev. Larry Glenz, O.M.C.

Rev. Larry GlenzI feel like my “Trust” level is steadily increasing. I have been practicing forgiveness — ACIM style — for more than two decades. Seeing the world as a classroom and every circumstance and situation as a “forgiveness opportunity” is the goal of the practice.  And I am definitely getting better at it.

Why do I think that I am getting better at this? It seems to be in the way I feel — the amount of love that comes my way — a feeling of confidence that everything is exactly as it should be for my continuing spiritual growth. I am so grateful to have this pathway to travel while I slowly yet steadily realize that I am the “dreamer of the dream.”

The situation that I can apply this to today has to do with the fact that my book, Forgiving Kevin, is being made into a full-length motion picture. Although this was not my idea, I did say, “yes” to the project after going to Holy Spirit. In fact, I felt that I heard Spirit tell me, “say yes, and then let go and leave the rest to Me.”

My Thanksgiving Crash

by Rev. Barbara Goodman Siegel, O.M.C.

Rev. Barbara SiegelI am ashamed to say that my day after Thanksgiving crash is as predictable as Thanksgiving. It has been a personal “tradition” for as long as I remember. Every year, I vow that this will be the year it won’t happen. This year, like so many years past, I think I have guarded against it, but, alas, I awaken this day after Thanksgiving and here it is.

The story that precipitates the crash is pretty much the same each year. Here are the highlights: No kids of my own and my step-children go to their mother’s house for Thanksgiving. Relatives ask us to join them for Thanksgiving and it feels like a “pity” invite. I feel like a fifth wheel as they are surrounded by their children and grandchildren. In Course words, my ego screams: “Separate, separate, separate” and I get up Friday morning depressed and feeling alone in the world.

My Inner Wisdom

by Rev. Andrea Sassa Archuleta, O.M.C.

Rev. Andrea ArchuletaAs a nondenominational minister, I embrace all religious and spiritual traditions as they are understood at their core. The shared core teaching being that we are all connected. Because of this interdependence, it behooves each of us to act with kindness and compassion toward one another. In this sense, ‘As we give, so do we receive.’

Believing in this faith, I still encounter many situations where I do not know what compassionate or kind act to take; what should I give or allow myself to receive? Over the years, though I have cultivated a reliable relationship with an Inner Guide, known to me as Inner Wisdom, that unfailing Guide aids me in choosing the exactly perfect act, or compassionate gesture, or knowing what to give and what to receive in every situation.

Mind Watching — A Family Affair

by Rev. Lee Catalano, O.M.C.

Rev. Lee CatalanoThe most powerful thing I have ever learned in my life is that there are two very distinct realities happening in the mind. You can call them light/dark… ego/christ… negative/positive… whatever you call it ...the single most important thing you can learn is to recognize it inside yourself. At 28 I opened up A Course in Miracles and what a relief to discover life was coming from me and not happening to me. Everything I was and am experiencing is coming from my thoughts.

The Body Is a Learning Tool

by Rev. Rosemarie Tropf, O.M.C.

Rev. Rosemarie TropfRecently I was on a kind of break from ACIM. Doesn’t that sound strange? Or maybe not to some of you. I had finished the courses necessary to get my ministerial credentials done faithfully for a couple of years, almost daily. I also did one more course afterwards, faithfully until near the end of that one.

Then I began to procrastinate. I took art classes. Then my fatigue issue increased to the point where I felt bogged down in life generally. I told myself I was still working the Course because I routinely asked Holy Spirit questions like, “help me to see this differently.” Or, “Holy Spirit I do not know what this means,” referring to my daily problems with fatigue. I would read a lesson from Myron’s daily postings and read it through it as fast as I could because I was in a hurry to go nowhere and do nothing except feel fatigued all day.

Sharing Miracles

by Rev. Gail Hamley, O.M.C.

In Lesson 159: I give the miracles I have received, the message is about forgiveness and seeing with ‘Christ’s vision,’ which is our vision when we are in union with that part of ourselves that knows the Truth. I hold this lesson as a vision for my life because I have experienced so many miracles in my life. One of the miracles is to be in a position to share them with so many people through my work and friendships. I share two miracles here with you.

I Am Not the Ego

Rev. Ken Gorman, O.M.C.

Rev. Ken GormanEckhart Tolle has a great video that describes his sort of waking up experience. He indicated he was going through a lot of depression and darkness. One night he had a thought… ‘I can’t live with myself anymore.’ The next moment he had another thought and noticed… hey, there are two things here, something that can’t live with something else. In the video he says that is when everything collapsed.

Transformation

by Barbara Franco Adams

As part of my studies as a ministerial student, I was recently completing an exercise in the course, The Transforming Power of Trust. This particular section states the following:

“When we believe in the idea of having an identity that is separate from God (or Love), unconsciously we know we are rejecting our true Nature, which is openness with Love. The result is feeling guilty and unworthy because deep inside, we know we are secretly rejecting Love. When we don’t want to admit to ourselves that we are rejecting Love, dissociation and projection occurs. This means we dissociate from knowing our oneness in God and throw (or project) the guilt and unworthiness that accompanies this out on the world, looking for guilt in others.”
