“You will be happy when_______,” instructs the ego. Jesus responds, “Until you experience contentment within, with who you are as a creation of God, you will never be happy — no matter what.” Doing housework, dirty laundry in my hands, dinner cooking on the stove, rushing into the kitchen, thoughts of Christmas in my mind, truth manifested within literally stopping me in my tracks. The word, “contentment” moved me to silence and an inner contentment washed me from the inside. Here and now I am content.

I have an “important” meeting tomorrow. I still have about 200 pages of material to read before then. Income tax stuff for the US and Canada is due. I have bills to pay and business paperwork to be completed. My body is fat and tired. My skin is sandpaper dry. My lips are chapped. My house is unlivable after a broken water line caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage. My husband and I are sleeping in a wellsite trailer but showering and eating at my sister’s house which is nearby. Spring in northern Canada is messy, muddy and cool. I could go on and on. (You know how ego can make up sad stories).

Yesterday, I received a frantic call from my daughter, who is attending a university out of town. She had slept through her alarm, and missed her exam. She arrived 20 minutes before the end of the allotted time and the classroom was already empty. (Anybody ever have a dream like this?)

I shuttered with fear when I noticed an envelope the mailman just dropped off, had “IRS-NOTICE OF LEVY” prominently stamped on it. Although the exact words going through my mind are not printable in this magazine, you can be assured they were not words of acceptance and gratitude. “How can this be happening to me?” And, “This cannot happen to me!” Are two thoughts I can share. Remember, I still hadn’t even opened the letter yet! My mind (ego) went straight to the worst case scenario: ”Life is so unfair and now I’m going to die!” (Footnote: it used to be my ego would take me down that path in stages, but since studying The Course, it just slams me there.)

I recently had a disagreement with a friend of mine. I lost sleep over it. I felt insulted and I thought negative thoughts about her. I wanted it to be about her.
Then I remembered that what we think are our own projections. I remembered to take it to Holy Spirit. I asked Holy Spirit why I had created this in my life. What in me needs to be healed? I’m innocent, I said.
I felt the warm comforting feeling that comes over me whenever I go to Him for help and heard the softest voice whisper, “If you find yourself feeling angry at her, look deeper.”

As many of you know, Tomas, my soul buddy, left the body in December 2010. He left through what appeared as cancer of the body. Tomas ‘awakened’ prior to leaving the body. However he was very aware that he chose cancer as a means by which he could apply vigilant discipline to prioritize peace, in order to achieve only ONE goal — to awaken.

Spirit: You are the Light of the world. You are Divine Light, right now, right where you are.
Dear Child, how little you see of Truth, how little you really comprehend. You need only ask, and it is given you. But still you do not ask, because you think that you will not like what you hear, or that you will be forced to disagree with your first choice.

I have worked with the ACIM lessons for seven years now. There have been times when I did them as thoroughly and as sincerely as I could, and there have been times when I didn’t touch them. Living with these lessons has been like a golden thread weaving itself through my life story.

Who are we to judge lessons presented to us as long, short, large, small, great, minor, important or irrelevant? Or both?
January-March, 2012
As the Course teaches, one of the biggest ways the ego keeps us trapped is through our own judgments or projections we place on the world, which is inherently neutral. Most of these judgments involve things I must be afraid of or reasons why I am guilty, not worthy and failing (and occasionally the arrogant flip side of the coin — why I deserve more/to win, am better than others, am not responsible, etc.). Forgiveness to me actually means working on/being at least a little willing to release these judgments (and the value I place on them) and letting something else entirely be shown to me by Holy Spirit.

As I reflect upon my past, I can find countless things that I feel that I should or could have changed or done differently. For example, here I am in my 50’s working on a doctorate degree in psychology that my ego tells me I should have completed 30 years ago.
I hear the ego’s voice scolding me, ”If you had only done the right thing, you could have had a different life. You could have had a better job and a successful career and a lot less pain brought on by near poverty.”

“For the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.” James 1:20
I have never won an argument! Even though the person I am arguing with screams at me, “I give up, you win!” My deep emotions and my burdened heart tell me this is definitely not a victory. The person I have pitted myself against and I have not been drawn together. In fact, we have emotionally and spiritually been driven further apart. When disagreements erupt, the interaction between the parties involved is less than ideal.

Lesson 108 is titled, ‘To give and receive are one in truth.’ For many of us, service to our community is the way that Holy Spirit chooses for us to experience this. When I was a resident at a spiritual center in London and was asked to join the management team as marketing director, I thought it was because of my unique skill sets, which was true to an extent. What I discovered was that the management positions within the community were as, or even more, valuable to the people providing them (me in this case) as they were to the community being served. It taught me that one of the main purposes of a spiritual community is to provide opportunities for service to its members wherever possible. These people would in turn allow the organization to grow and extend the connections deeper and more broadly across the entire community.

Everything that you see in the world challenges your trust in turning all your decisions over to Inner Guidance. We have great resistance to trusting and we need to recognize this before we can meet the all-important challenge. Every time we feel emotions that are in the category of “fear” thoughts, we can be certain we have dropped the hand of our Higher Power. There is someone or something that we haven’t forgiven.

I’ve been teaching a series of lessons on forgiveness on ACIM Gather. The last one I did was from the Workbook, “What is Forgiveness?” This section has helped me understand the Course’s definition of the word forgiveness, but more importantly, it has helped me practice forgiveness.
So how does the Course define forgiveness? It begins by telling us that forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It has taken me a long time to accept this. At first it was completely unacceptable to me. Slowly over time as my willingness grew, I began to embrace it as my salvation.
