Letting Our Mind Be at Peace

The real world cannot be perceived except through eyes forgiveness blesses, so they see a world where terror is impossible, and witnesses to fear can not be found.

The real world holds a counterpart for each unhappy thought reflected in your world; a sure correction for the sights of fear and sounds of battle which your world contains. The real world shows a world seen differently, through quiet eyes and with a mind at peace. Nothing but rest is there. There are no cries of pain and sorrow heard, for nothing there remains outside forgiveness. And the sights are gentle. Only happy sights and sounds can reach the mind that has forgiven itself. If we want to be happy we have to let go of all judgment. It is judgment that holds the perception of separation in place. It is judgment that sets us apart from our brothers and the world. It is judgment that makes differences seem real and conflict inevitable.

We have taught ourselves that our survival depends upon judgment. The seeming life we are protecting is a false image that is not real. Our real life is in God, the Source of real happiness. Yet God seems far away, out of reach. But we have been given the means to lay down our investment in the false images of separation and see past them to the real world, where there is no conflict and only joy.

When we accept the Holy Spirit’s help to see with Christ’s vision, we accept the means to freedom from fear and guilt. As we are willing to bring our perceptions to the Holy Spirit in our minds, we learn to see that we remain united with our brothers and our Source. Our mind accepts peace as we let go of judgment with the Holy Spirit’s help.

Today we would let the Holy Spirit guide our vision so that our minds can be at peace.

God Goes with Us Wherever We Go

You who hold your brother’s hand also hold mine, for when you joined each other you were not alone.

Each instant that we spend together will teach you that this goal [of oneness] is possible, and will strengthen your desire to reach [oneness]. And in your desire lies its accomplishment. Your desire is now in complete accord with all the power of the Holy Spirit’s Will. No little, faltering footstep that you may take can separate your desire from His Will and from His strength. I hold your hand as surely as you agreed to take your brother’s. You will not separate, for I stand with you and walk with you in your advance to truth. And where we go we carry God with us. When we join with the Holy Spirit, our job is to see the Light beyond the dream in every brother. As we join with the Holy Spirit in our one goal of remembering our oneness, we see the Light of Truth in every brother. We remember we do not go Home alone.

The Holy Spirit guides us, step by step, in how to be truly helpful to every brother we meet or even think of. This is our practice for today.

Seeing the Light and Love Beyond Appearances

You have given everything you see the meaning it has for you. The meaning you give determines your response to it and its effect on you. Behind the appearance of separation is your desire to have it so; therein arises its seeming effect on you. The world you see has the power over you that you gave it, nothing more.

Withdraw the desire to believe it real, and its power will vanish. Your eyes will continue to see the forms of separation, but your mind will see the Light and Love just beyond form. Through that perception, you are restored to the Unity beyond all form. Abide in that wholly purified perception, and the world will affect you not.

You need not suffer, though a suffering world appears all around you, if you abide in the heart of Love. Rest in the Self, give all to all, and you will be free. (From the Christ Mind Book II, page 120,121. Italics added.)

Our desire for separation comes from our grievance against God. We asked God for specialness, to have more than everything, something we could call ours alone. God could not give this, for it was asking God to change, to not be Himself. This is the foundation of the ego.

This is why forgiveness is the central theme of A Course in Miracles. Though it appears that we forgive others and ourselves, they are representations of what we believe about God. When we achieve full forgiveness, we are able to accept the limitless, eternal Love God gave us in the creation of our Self.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit to help us see with His Light and Love, that we may look past appearances and remember our Self.

We Are One in the Endless Love of God

We have a mission here. We did not come to reinforce the madness that we once believed in. Let us not forget the goal that we accepted. It is more than just our happiness alone we came to gain. What we accept as what we are proclaims what everyone must be, along with us. Fail not your brothers, or you fail yourself. Look lovingly on them, that they may know that they are part of you, and you of them.

This does Atonement teach, and demonstrates the Oneness of God’s Son is unassailed by his belief he knows not what he is. Today accept Atonement, not to change reality, but merely to accept the truth about yourself, and go your way rejoicing in the endless Love of God. It is but this that we are asked to do. Today we give thanks for the truth of what we are. Today we practice giving recognition to the truth that everyone is God’s pure love and nothing else. The ego’s ideas of separation, guilt and fear are not true. Stories of winning and losing, birth and death are not true. Everyone is the eternal Spirit of Love, just as we are. Today we celebrate this fact.

We rest in God’s Love… We extend our gratitude that only the truth of God’s eternal oneness is true… We rest in this remembering today.

Joining with Holy Spirit’s Undivided Goal

The mind that serves the Holy Spirit is unlimited forever, in all ways, beyond the laws of time and space, unbound by any preconceptions, and with strength and power to do whatever it is asked. Attack thoughts cannot enter such a mind, because it has been given to the Source of love, and fear can never enter in a mind that has attached itself to love. It rests in God. And who can be afraid who lives in Innocence, and only loves?

The Holy Spirit is the home of minds that seek for freedom. In Him they have found what they have sought. The body’s purpose now is unambiguous. And it becomes perfect in the ability to serve an undivided goal.

I am not a body. I am free.
I hear the Voice that God has given me,
and it is only this my mind obeys. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 199, W-pI.199.2;6:1-4;8:7-9. See also ACIM Lesson 199 Insights.)

The ego’s goal could be said to be “divide and conquer.” Yet it conquers only in dreams, for Love cannot be divided. The way out of the chaos and conflict of the dream of separation is to change our allegiance from the ego to the Holy Spirit.

We do this through forgiveness — letting go of the wish to separate. The wish to separate manifests as judgment, fear and guilt. The focal point of all this is the body. For the body is a wall that appears to separate the Self into many warring parts.

The practice of reminding ourselves frequently, “I am not a body, I am free,” loosens our investment in the wall that appears to separate us. As we align ourselves with the Holy Spirit, our inner vision shows us that we are united with all our brothers in the one Self That is wholly loving.

Today we would remind ourselves often, “I am not a body. I am free.”

Forgiveness Is the Way Home

You cannot give yourself your innocence, for you are too confused about yourself. But should one brother dawn upon your sight as wholly worthy of forgiveness, then your concept of yourself is wholly changed. Your “evil” thoughts have been forgiven with his, because you let them all affect you not. No longer do you choose that you should be the sign of evil and of guilt in him. And as you gave your trust to what is good in him, you gave it to the good in you.

In terms of concepts, it is thus you see him more than just a body, for the good is never what the body seems to be. The actions of the body are perceived as coming from the “baser” part of you, and thus of him as well. By focusing upon the good in him, the body grows decreasingly persistent in your sight, and will at length be seen as little more than just a shadow circling round the good. And this will be your concept of yourself, when you have reached the world beyond the sight your eyes alone can offer you to see. For you will not interpret what you see without the Aid That God has given you. And in His sight there is another world.”

Forgiveness brings us vision that shows us the way to our Home in Love. We cannot see the innocence of our brother while we insist in seeing him as a body. The actions of bodies always demonstrate the belief that separation is real.

Seeing a brother as separate is an attack on his reality and his innocence. It is a denial of the truth. As we choose to accept the Holy Spirit’s vision, the appearances of bodies lose their seeming importance. We learn to recognize that what bodies do has no effect because bodies are not real. What the body’s eyes seem to see diminishes in our awareness as we forgive and let the Holy Spirit’s vision take its place.

The moment by moment practice of accepting Holy Spirit’s vision as our own is the journey of release from fear and guilt. It is the way Home.

Practicing the Truth That Sets Us Free

[I am as God created me.] Holy indeed is he who makes these words his own; arising with them in his mind, recalling them throughout the day, at night bringing them with him as he goes to sleep. His dreams are happy and his rest secure, his safety certain and his body healed, because he sleeps and wakens with the truth before him always. He will save the world, because he gives the world what he receives each time he practices the words of truth. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 162, W-pI.162.3. Being as God created us, we must be wholly loving, invulnerable and incapable of harming anything or anyone. These are the attributes of the one Self we share with everyone, the one Self that lives and has its being in God.

It seems that we are anything but this description of our Self. This is because we have identified with a false image that is the denial of Truth. Frequent repeating of this idea helps loosen our identification with the false. We have reinforced heavily the false belief. So we need frequent, consistent reinforcement of the truth that we are as God created us. This is how we undo the false belief and welcome the truth that we are Love, we are safe and we are harmless because we are as God created us.

Today we practice reminding ourselves of this saving Truth as we look upon a world which seems to show us its opposite. This is how we bring the Truth to dispel the illusion. This is how we return Home.
