Shifting from False Identity to Our True Identity as Love

The ego’s fundamental wish is to replace God. In fact, the ego is the physical embodiment of that wish. For it is that wish that seems to surround the mind with a body, keeping it separate and alone, and unable to reach other minds except through the body that was made to imprison it. The limit on communication cannot be the best means to expand communication. Yet the ego would have you believe that it is.

We will try today to stop these senseless attacks on salvation. We will try to welcome it instead. Your upside-down perception has been ruinous to your peace of mind. You have seen yourself in a body and the truth outside you, locked away from your awareness by the body’s limitations. Now we are going to try to see this differently.

The light of truth is in us, where it was placed by God. It is the body that is outside us, and is not our concern. To be without a body is to be in our natural state. To recognize the light of truth in us is to recognize ourselves as we are. To see our Self as separate from the body is to end the attack on God’s plan for salvation, and to accept it instead. And wherever His plan is accepted, it is accomplished already. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 72, W-pI.72.2,8,9. See also ACIM Lesson 72 Insights.)

One of the fundamental messages in A Course in Miracles is that we are not a body. The body is wholly unlike God in every way; thus it is impossible that the body could be created by God. This idea frees us from all guilt, fear pain, suffering and sense of loss. Only if we think we are a body do we experience any of these symptoms.

We can free ourselves in any moment by dis-identifying with the body as what we are and accepting the Self that God created as His Son. This Self we are is wholly loving, eternally at peace and overflowing with joy. This is our natural state.

Because we have identified with the body so completely, it takes time to peal away the layers of attachment to this false identity. We do this through forgiveness, but we do not do it alone. Thinking we are alone is the cause of the problem. We must let the Holy Spirit help us see past the loneliness and isolation to our unity with the Love that is eternally present. This is God’s plan for our salvation.

Joining with Peace

Peace is the bridge that everyone will cross, to leave this world behind. But peace begins within the world perceived as different, and leading from this fresh perception to the gate of Heaven and the way beyond. Peace is the answer to conflicting goals, to senseless journeys, frantic, vain pursuits, and meaningless endeavors. Now the way is easy, sloping gently toward the bridge where freedom lies within the peace of God. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 200. See also ACIM Lesson 200 Insights., W-pI.200.8)

Today we practice tuning in to the Source of peace in everyone… Today we practice seeing passed ego’s thoughts to the eternal Love and peace of God that is everyone’s reality… Today we practice stepping back and opening to the Truth within our minds…

We are led in gentleness and sure protection. Fear disappears while we remember we are safe in the Home of God, along with every brother. We are all equal in God’s Love. Peace is the means by which we all return to the Home which we never left in Truth.

Acknowledging the Unity Beyond the Dream

Oneness and sickness [separation] cannot coexist. God’s teachers choose to look on dreams a while. It is a conscious choice. For they have learned that all choices are made consciously, with full awareness of their consequences. The dream says otherwise, but who would put his faith in dreams once they are recognized for what they are? Awareness of dreaming is the real function of God’s teachers. They watch the dream figures come and go, shift and change, suffer and die. Yet they are not deceived by what they see. They recognize that to behold a dream figure as sick and separate is no more real than to regard it as healthy and beautiful. Unity alone is not a thing of dreams. And it is this God’s teachers acknowledge as behind the dream, beyond all seeming and yet surely theirs. (A Course in Miracles, M-12.6)

Acknowledging the unity beyond the dream is our function as we open our minds to Holy Spirit’s way of seeing. The truth is we are one united Spirit of Love. And dreams of separate bodies just reflect the sick mind of the ego that believes in separate bodies and differences.

As we open to the truth, we still see the dream but we see it lightly, like a thin veil hides the one Light of Love behind it. We are reinforcing the fact that we really are the same Light of Love, united as One. Our faith in dreams is dissolving as we become more and more aware that the world is just a dream of being separate and alone. Fear thoughts are shaken off. As they drop away, we see our brothers truly. Fearful behavior is recognized as a call for Love.

We are in deep gratitude as we see that we are here to help every brother awaken to the truth along with us. As we see the truth in every brother, we are indeed being truly helpful.

Our Identity Is in God

Today we will again give thanks for our Identity in God. Our home is safe, protection guaranteed in all we do, power and strength available to us in all our undertakings.

Today we will not doubt His Love for us, nor question His protection and His care. No meaningless anxieties can come between our faith and our awareness of His Presence. We are one with Him today in recognition and remembrance. We feel Him in our hearts. Our minds contain His Thoughts; our eyes behold His loveliness in all we look upon. Today we see only the loving and the lovable.

Peace be to you today. Secure your peace by practicing awareness you are one with your Creator, as He is with you.” (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 124, W-pI.124.1:1-2;4:1-6;8:1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 124 Insights.)

If our Identity is in God, we must share all His attributes. We must be as loving as He is. We must be changeless and sinless. We must be full of joy and in peace that cannot be disturbed. We must have all of God’s strength and all His Love, for What God is, we are. There can be nothing to fear. Loss and lack are impossible because our Identity is in God.

Because God is all that is, our Identity is all that is. Every brother is part of our Identity. Nothing exists outside of God. To see a brother truly is to see him with all the attributes of God, and nothing else.

We would hold these thoughts in our mind today that everything we see would remind us of our Identity in God.

Choosing the Peace and Love of God

…let Him [the Teacher Who instructs in quiet] teach you what to do and say and think, each time you turn to Him. He will not fail to be available to you, each time you call to Him to help you. A Course in Miracles Workbook Review VI, (W-pI.VI.7:2-3. See also ACIM Lesson 201 Insights.)

No matter how confusing, frightening, depressing or lonely our life seems to be, we always have Help. Our Creator has not forgotten us and has given us a Guide Whose only purpose is to lead us back to our natural place in the Heart of Love. With gentleness and patience this Guide is always offering us help. We need only be willing to pause for a moment, turn away from the ego’s misdirection and open to the Guidance of our Inner Teacher.

Today, whenever a thought disturbs our peace, we will remind ourselves:
This thought I do not want.
I choose instead the peace and Love of God.

Growing Strong in the Way of Love

Steady our feet, our Father. Let our doubts be quiet and our holy minds be still, and speak to us. We have no words to give to You. We would but listen to Your Word, and make it ours. Lead our practicing as does a father lead a little child along a way he does not understand. Yet does he follow, sure that he is safe because his father leads the way for him.

So do we bring our practicing to You. And if we stumble, You will raise us up. If we forget the way, we count upon Your sure remembering. We wander off, but You will not forget to call us back. Quicken our footsteps now, that we may walk more certainly and quickly unto You. And we accept the Word You offer us to unify our practicing, as we review the thoughts that You have given us. When a child is learning to walk, at first he stumbles, his steps waver and he doesn’t always walk in a straight line. Yet a loving parent stays with the child, providing support and guidance as it is helpful. With practice the child learns to walk steadily on his own.

Likewise, our Father is always there for us. He does not judge us when our steps falter or we wander off to explore something that got our attention off the path to Him. He stays with us, always offering His support with Love, compassion and gentleness far beyond our experience in the world. We can count on His eternal Presence when we have doubts and fears. His Help is always offered, never withdrawn. It waits only on our acceptance.

Today we would accept His Help that we may grow strong with His strength within us to walk in the way of Love and extend It to all our brothers.

Welcoming Peace in Our Minds

When you are still an instant, when the world recedes from you, when valueless ideas cease to have value in your restless mind, then will you hear His [Christ’s] Voice. So poignantly He calls to you that you will not resist Him longer. In that instant He will take you to His home, and you will stay with Him in perfect stillness, silent and at peace, beyond all words, untouched by fear and doubt, sublimely certain that you are at home.

It is time to stop the frustrating searching for peace of mind where it cannot be found. It is time to stop paying attention to the ego’s directions, which always lead away from peace, for the ego is afraid of peace.

It is time to train our minds to frequently pause to welcome the peace that already lies within us. As we let ourselves experience peace from within, we open the channels of communication to hear Christ’s Voice speak to us of the Love we and all our brothers are. Christ’s Voice will always bring us messages of Love and show us the Truth in our brothers. The practice of pausing and welcoming peace into our minds will redirect our attention to the path that leads us Home where we belong.

We need only practice being still an instant and welcoming peace to be led to the safety and stillness of our Home.
