Shame

by Rev. Joyce Peebles, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

Where I live in rural Arkansas, we do not have many fancy restaurants. On my anniversary we went to a nice hotel and ate dinner with another couple. When the bill came it included a $36.00 “service charge.” I had never heard of this before and wondered if that was a built-in tip for the meal. The other three at the table tried to explain it was not a tip but an additional fee added on to the bill.

I felt very unsophisticated and stupid that they all knew what it was, and I did not. The others at the table were used to fancy restaurants and expense accounts. I experienced a feeling of shame because somehow, I should have known and was therefore not “good enough.” I had been found wanting.

Awakening Kindness

by Rev. Dan Strodl, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

A Course in Miracles is a mind training program designed to take us from fear to love. When we work through the Course with willingness and vigilance, the ego thought system weakens and is gently replaced with right minded thinking. Where we once saw only our self interest, we now awaken our true Self. The walls of self-centeredness come down and love fills the gap.

As judgments are noticed and released (forgiven), we see our brothers in a new way. We see beyond their bodies to their innocence, their beauty, their light. One important aspect of Love is kindness. As a new world awakens in us, we begin to care about others and want to extend kindness to them. This isn’t the ego’s version of kindness i.e: kindness to get. This is true kindness, an extension of love.

Letting Your Mind be Healed by Holy Spirit

by Gina Lucia, Ministerial Candidate

Every moment of every day is an opportunity for us to heal our perceptions of the world around us, the one in which we see with the body’s eyes. This can only be done with the assistance of the Holy Spirit. This is why it is necessary to have some sort of “spiritual” practice every day. To align ourselves vertically with our higher Holy Spirit selves before we begin the day’s journey can save us from the illusions our inventive minds love to participate in. Lesson 137 teaches us, “When I am healed I am not healed alone.”

“And as you let yourself be healed, you see all those around you, or who cross your mind, or whom you touch or those who seem to have no contact with you, healed along with you. Perhaps you will not recognize all that your healing touches, nor realize how great your offering of healing is to all the world, when you let healing come to you. But you are never healed alone. And legions upon legions will receive the gift of healing that you receive when you are healed.” (W-137.10)

Perfect Creation

by Rev. Paula Richards, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

I was recently moved by a video I watched about service animals. This young boy, Matt, is epileptic, and he now has a service dog. Merlin can sense an oncoming seizure long before it occurs, giving Matt’s family time to medicate and protect him.

It was what Matt’s mother said that really got my attention: “When Merlin looks up into Matt’s face, he doesn’t see a kid with epilepsy. He sees the most perfect creation God ever made. If you see that sort of adoration reflected back at you day after day, it changes the way you feel about yourself.”

Claim Your Power in 2020

by Rev. Barbara Goodman Siegel, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

My New Year’s resolution is to own my power. I am talking about the power that A Course in Miracles so clearly tells me is literally my God-given right. As one of my dear teachers said to me: “Barbara, it is just as arrogant not to acknowledge your power as it is to boast about it.” In other words, not claiming our power keeps us, in a rather weird way, special and certainly separate.

There are times when I accept my God-given power. But I also have old, worn out beliefs that I am powerless, unworthy and, despite great evidence to the contrary, inadequate. Too often, I allow these beliefs get the better of me.

I hereby proclaim that I am done with those old beliefs! To that end, I wrote a list of affirmations that state what my God-given power consists of. I want to share the list with you for you to use to reclaim your God-given power as well. It is through each of us claiming and owning our power that we and all our brothers are saved.

On Being Special

by Peggy Rivera, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

What does it mean do be special? Doesn’t everyone have their own specialness, their own way of being special? It has often felt like that to me. Many times in my life I felt un-special. In other words, I felt that everyone else was so special in their own way, but me — I was a dud.

Nothing special here. There were also times when I strove to be special. When I wanted to be better at singing than someone else or look better in my prom dress than another girl in hers, but that feeling was awful because for me to feel special, someone else had to feel bad. So when I ask what it means to be special, I am reminded that specialness is a judgment. It is the great illusion. It is an attack against God.

Allow, Allow, Allow

by Rev. Maria Kingsley, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

How could I let go, how could I allow? It is not safe, I need to fight now… to maintain my way, follow my plan… Surely this must be the best way to go ahead.

Jesus says, “Follow me.” I think I am doing that. But why is there fear in my heart? What do I need to allow, what is it You want?

I am open to hearing; I’ve asked many times. I don’t feel any change, I may not fully trust Your loving Guidance and Your sure touch.

I know you are right there by my side. I’m Reaching for your Hand. My heart feels Your Love; I’m calmer and more certain that Trust is warranted and there is really nothing to fear.

ACIM Text Questions and Answers

Pathways of Light staff

Excerpts from Text Made Simple www.pathwaysoflight.org/acim_text

What part does Jesus play in the Atonement?

The Course is written from the point of view that Jesus is the speaker. Because he has wholly aligned his thoughts with the Holy Spirit, he is the manifestation or expression of the Holy Spirit. So when he says, “I am in charge of the process of Atonement,” (T-1.III.1:1) we can think of it as the Holy Spirit speaking to us through the symbol that we call Jesus. It is not important that we believe that this is Jesus talking. The ego can easily get caught up in theological debates and try to keep our attention on ‘outer form’ rather than the truth of oneness. What is important is that we allow ourselves to experience and extend miracles (healed perception), which is the means to the Atonement.

Reaching for the Creative Level

by Rev. Larry Glenz, O.M.C.

“The real purpose of this world is to use it to correct your unbelief. You can never control the effects of fear yourself because you made fear, and you believe in what you made.” (T-1.VI.4:1-2)

I was stunned. After three years of treatment, my oncologist told me that my prostate cancer has escaped the prostate and has now spread to the lymph nodes. It is hard to describe what the fear felt like when I received this news. I never thought that my cancer treatment would not work. The radiation therapy has tested to be over 90% effective. It did not work on me.

I changed doctors and hospitals and followed that first treatment with radioactive seeds that also has a high success rate as a salvage treatment. But after a year my P.S.A. (a prostate cancer indicator) continued to rise.

The P.E.T. scan that followed confirmed that the cancer has metastasized. It was strongly recommended that a new treatment of hormonal therapy should be undertaken immediately.

Letting Holy Spirit Heal Our Fear Thoughts

by Revs. Mary & Robert Stoelting

The path to peace of mind is to notice our barriers to Love — our fear thoughts — and take these thoughts to the Holy Spirit to be undone. We cannot do this on our own because on our own, we know nothing. On our own, we place our belief in being different from the Love we are. In this world of separate bodies, we believe in time and space, the birth and death of our “unique” bodies.

We also believe we are weak and vulnerable, in a world that is in constant conflict from “outside forces” that have nothing to do with the thoughts that constantly roll through our minds.

In truth, the world we see is in direct correlation to the thoughts we are believing in.

The way out of this ongoing experience of problem after problem, brought on by the constant chatter of our fear thoughts, is to consistently ask your true Self, the Holy Spirit, to heal our minds of all thoughts that are not true.

Conversation with Spirit: What Is the Nature of Sin?

by Rev. Jim Peterson, O.M.C.

What inspired me with this poem is the notion that sin is a belief that Love can be lost. In essence it is the idea that the self or an “other” can be without Love or lost to Love. When we attack another in any form, we are upholding the belief that they are without Love and unworthy of Love. This is the imaginary world that is unknown to God.

I sense the reason this is being brought forward at this time is the political strife that seems to surround me. Everyone seems to be talking and thinking about it and taking sides. For me it has been challenging to stay centered within this storm. I find my distress more in the compassion (sorrow) I have for the pain that others are barring themselves under. The poem reminded me that sorrow also the belief in the loss of Love. No one is abandoned and the plan for salvation is in place. My only role is to extend Love and allow Love’s inspiration to guide me in thought and action.

Love, Jim

Heaven Is Here. Heaven Is Now.

by Rev. Dan Strodl, O.M.C.

“Heaven is here. There is nowhere else. Heaven is now. There is no other time. No teaching that does not lead to this is of concern to God’s teachers.” (M-24.6)

Since childhood I believed that Heaven was a place you went to after you died. It was up in the sky, amongst the clouds, and you were greeted at the gates by angels flying about. And if you had led a sinless life, the gates of Heaven were open to you, and you sat on a cloud with God.

“Why wait for Heaven? It is here today.” (W-pI.131.6:1-2)

But with A Course in Miracles all my beliefs have been turned upside down, including my beliefs about Heaven. I now see Heaven as in my mind, always there, waiting for me to choose my right mind.

“Heaven is here, and Heaven is your home.” (S-IV.8.9)
