How many times have you sat with someone you care about who was sick or even dying? Have you had the experience of being a long term caretaker? Did you take the time to assess your feelings of what was going on?
So often we have the task before us to try to comfort the sick and sometimes we feel we should be able to heal them. And if we cannot help them, we may decide to hate ourselves for it.
Or the situation can be that you are so busy taking care of the other person that you forgot to take care of yourself. That is very common with couples in the fall of their lives. The one who takes care of the one who gets sick often ends up sick themselves. I remember when my parents were in that time of their lives both of them were sick and trying to take care of each other and not able to really succeed so I told them they needed to move in with me so I could take care of them.
I was still working full time and I was a very busy massage therapist doing house calls. I would leave the house in the morning and come home in between clients to check on them. Often there would be doctor appointments we would have to schedule in between as well. You can imagine how that was going. They were not happy living in my house and resented me because they wanted to be in their own home, and all the creations surrounding those thoughts (their own fears regarding the time of life they were in and the uncertainty of the future, afraid of leaving each other and missing their home), coupled with my own creations of resentment, I was more and more exhausted.
I wasn’t ready for the role reversal that was taking place and neither were they. Before you know it there was a big argument which led to their departure from my home. And I was devastated. I was just trying to be helpful. I could not believe how ungrateful they were. By the way, this is before I began studying the Course. I wish I knew then what I know now.
What happens when we let the ego take over? The Course says, “The closer you come to the foundation of the ego’s thought system, the darker and more obscure becomes the way.” ….. But then it also says, “But even the little spark in your mind is enough to lighten it. Bring this light fearlessly with you, and bravely hold it up to the foundation of the ego’s thought system. ……Bring the terror out into the light, there you will see that it rested on nothingness, therefore your fears are based on nothing.” I mean from the perspective I now have it is so clear how I could have done things differently.
I wish that I realized at that time how fearful we all were. People hurt each other when they are hurting. These are the creations of the ego.
We are wired to be connected to each other. We are not supposed to be alone. One of our basic needs is to be accepted by our parents and then to be loved. Then we need to be authentic. But because of our ego creations of guilt and self-loathing, we create illness. That is how illness is an attack on what God has made. When we perceive healing, we have to see that as healing for ourselves just as much as for the other.
How can we help others when we are attacking ourselves?
I watched a video by a doctor named Dr. Gabor Mate’ called, “When the Body Says No,” and he talked about how, as babies, we cannot survive without an adult caretaker like our parents. Without them we would die. And he discussed how we need them to accept us and love us and how we adjust our thoughts so they will accept us. He said that our body has the ability to feel what our caretakers feel. We can tell if they are afraid or mad or whatever they are feeling from our gut feelings.
He asked about a couple of things that could cause a reaction like was anyone in the room ever sexually molested, and then he asked how many people told anyone and none of them did. He said, “Why not?”
They all said they were afraid their parents would be disappointed in them. He then said that is the beginning of a path to illness. And then at that moment, we begin to lose our authenticity, and that is one of the basic human needs. Guilt sets in and the ego attacks. That is when you begin to forget who you are.
I remember a woman who helped me so much because she reminded me who I am. She listened to my story with Love and compassion. I felt heard and accepted and I started my healing journey.
I realized that we can really be of service through Love, compassion, listening non-judgmentally and gently and lovingly reminding each other who we really are. The relationship we have with others must be the same as the relationship we have with ourselves. We have to remember that all pain or illness or belief in separation and fear is really a call for Love. Think of how sweet it feels to hold a little puppy or kitten. How soft their fur is how soothing it is to touch and connect with an innocent little animal. If we learn to identify with that feeling and extend that, think of how pleasing to the soul that would be. We could soothe so much pain, and I realize it isn’t always that easy. We are experts at complicating our earth existence.
But if we learn to really hear each other’s call for Love, and call upon the Holy Spirit to help us understand the dynamics of what we need to take away from this we will be that much closer to finding our Heaven here on earth.
God wants us to be happy and to know how much He loves us. We have a body that we can use to comfort each other, and to create beauty on the earth through art, and music and gardens and great food and companionships. We are partners on this journey, helping each other remember who we really are. We are Spirit having a human experience.

I began the Pathways of Light ministerial classes this year and have received so much from the meditations and exercises. This experience is from the “Sharing with Your Inner Child” meditation in Course 112: Knowing Your True Purpose.
During the guided meditation I find my infant self clothed only in a cloth diaper, sitting on the brown braided rug in the living room. She’s smiling, happy. I pick her up and her eyes are bright, shining love all over me. I bask in that love. We’re in a cocoon of love and I can’t look away from her eyes shining that love all over me and spilling out to fill the space we’re in.
I admire the rest of her, perfect skin, delicate fingers and toes and lustrous dark hair and I realize she is perfect. She came to this world perfect and a sense of relief washes over me. There’s nothing I can tell this infant that she doesn’t already know. I feel like she has comforted me.
Next I see her walking in the woods, solumn, brow furrowed. She’s looking at the ground, at the path she’s traversing, the path that’s there only because she has walked this same forest in the same way so many times. She is six and has to start first grade soon.
She’s worried because she knows things are going to change and not in a good way. Although she couldn’t tell you how they’re going to change, she just knows this change will take her farther from that quiet place inside where she prefers to dwell. In that quiet place she can rememer, almost, Who She Really Is and while she has no words for It, It comforts her and brings her joy. When she tried to talk to the grownups about all these thoughts inside her, they acted like she just didn’t want to do what she’s supposed to do, which is go to school. She’s scared of conformity, althought she doesn’t know yet what that word even means and she’s scared of forgetting her true nature, of losing that quiet place inside.
I go to her side and she seems surprised that a grownup has joined her here in the woods. I talk to her gently and I tell her that yes, things are changing and no, you won’t like all of it, but you survived all the changes. I tell her that yes, her greatest fears will come to pass, but so will her greatest hopes and that the Love She Is will refuse to be forgotten.
I tell her that yes, she will conform for a while but that before long, she’ll be angering all the grownups with her non-conformity and that eventually, when she’s an adult, many many moons from now, her mom will tell her how she admired that about her, and how the very traits that irritated her so much and seemed to cause so much turmoil between them also caused her to believe in her. And then I tell her how one day, even further away than that day, much further, that she’d be sitting in her living room writing about our encounter and about how she did survive her greatest fears and with all of the Love She Is, intact.
She perked up a lot at that and looked up at me with eyes as bright as her infant self’s. She grabbed my hand and asked if I wanted to swing on her bag swing first. “If you jump off the doghouse roof, you can swing really high!” she exclaimed. “I do,” I said, and off we ran towards the swing, towards the life waiting for us.

“The Car and the Pause GPS”
Here at Pause we train people how to become Pause Practitioners and share this helpful practice with others, all for free! One of our current students shared the perfect experience with all of us last week; Perfect, because she was willing to ask for help!
Maxine got into her car excited to be on her way that morning to the Practitioner training. As enthusiastic as Maxine was, her car was, well, not so much. Cranking on the ignition and, nothing! Oh boy, what now?
Before pausing, Maxine’s mind began racing. Now what! What am I going to do? I’m going to be late. I’ll have to call roadside assistance. How much is that going to cost? I’ll be late for Pause training, oh no! Anxious, worried, a moment of helplessness and a bit of “Really, are you kidding me.”
While the car stood stagnant, the PAUSE GPS in Maxine’s mind flashed a turn signal:
> > > PAUSE, STEP BACK, STEP ASIDE, LET INSPIRATION GUIDE and Maxine’s mind turned around.
IN THE PAUSE Maxine’s awareness of her surroundings expanded! Yes, that actually happens. Look, there’s the maintenance man! Funny how she didn’t see him and his truck sitting there before she paused.
Maxine hops out of her car and asks him if he can help her jump the battery. He has no cables, but Maxine does and he is happy to help.
So often we think people don’t want to help. We fear burdening people or inconveniencing them in some way. Most of the time people are not only willing to help, they are grateful to have the uplifting experience that comes with helping one another.
A few minutes later the battery is awake, the car is running and Maxine is on her way to Pause Practitioner Training. She is relaxed, grateful, happy and early!! Best of all she has a perfect Pause story to share, one from which we can all learn the value of asking for help, receiving help and letting someone else be helpful.
Asking for help is coming from a position of strength, not weakness. The reason for this is that asking for help requires humbling this me-character who is often feeling embarrassed, ashamed and less than when it comes to asking someone, “Will you help me?” I find that when I am willing to humble this “me-self” to Inspiration — kind of like letting go of my hot air balloon into the vast blue sky — I create a way of helping another and myself — All in one simple Pause.

October-December, 2018
This August, I decided that as I read the message of the day to take time to reflect and journal about it. I received some beautiful insights:
Aug.16: Lesson 228: God has condemned me not. No more do I.
I wrote: Why am I feeling so guilty? Why am I feeling like I don’t deserve the best? Why can’t I fully embrace my own Divine Self? Why is it so challenging to believe this fully and completely?
Holy Spirit: Dear Soul, it is what the ego is doing — playing you against You, making you want to stay small when you are not. Making you feel unworthy when you have Heaven within You.
It is just a game and you could choose to stop playing and know that as a reluctant player (at first) you will have to be mindful, attentive to refusing to play. Ego will leave you alone for a while, then he might come back. However you are stronger as you acknowledge the change of mind that is taking place…
You are strong, holy, worthy, loving and so much more… you might not realize it fully, however it is the only truth….We are here to help you, sweet child of God… with love and gratitude…
Aug. 17: Lesson 229: Love, which created me, is what I am.
Me: Okay, I know that God created me perfectly, so why is it that I hesitate to fully believe this?
Holy Spirit: Ah! Sweet soul, ego is fooling you, he is scaring you and you don’t have to believe him as he is nothing, and he never speaks the truth. Open your heart, soul and mind to Me, I will help you, I know what is real, what is important, what needs to happen for you to be You. So sweet soul, you are whole, holy, loving child of God. That’s it, trust… I am always there and it is the ‘job’ that God gave Me to be your protector, your communicator, your translator….Ask and receive.”
Aug. 18: Lesson 230: Now will I seek and find the peace of God.
Holy Spirit: Dear Soul, seek with your soul/your heart, listen to My Voice listen to the Song of Heaven, listen to the quiet within and you shall find the peace of God — it is always there waiting for you to acknowledge, to merge with. It is part of your divine ‘blueprint’, part of God so part of you. The peace of God is sweet, welcoming, calm, indescribable with words to do it justice. Spirit is there waiting for you to help you settle in that peace of God and to help you enjoy it… With Love.”
I thought I was done with these old thinking patterns… and then I realized that these are calls for Love. I asked Holy Spirit’s help …forgiveness and extending Love are the keys… I received with gratefulness… These daily messages help me reconnect with Source, be okay with choosing again and again if necessary, to be free to let go of the ‘self-insecurity’ and ego-driven expectation and trust that I have all the help I need.
On September 1st I wrote: ”I know nothing of what this month will be about so I open my heart, soul and mind to the guidance of Spirit to help me be the best I could be — a child of God, created like Him to Love, to be His ambassador.”
