Who Rules Your Mind?

Inspired by ACIM Workbook Lesson 26, “I rule my mind, which I alone must rule.”

Who rules your mind?

Have you left the door open for intruders to enter and trash your sense of peace?

Have you given the key to anyone who asks, or worse, demands it?

Do you claim your mind as yours, or do you offer it to whomever wishes to come inside, settle in and, after overstaying their welcome, claim Squatter’s Rights?

Do you step aside and passively let anyone who dares push their way past the threshold, allowing them the unquestioned freedom to chisel away at your serenity?

I’ll ask you again: Who rules your mind?

If you’re not sure, check in with that guy, Guilt, and his buddy, Anxiety. Without a moment’s hesitation, they’ll tell you if you’ve given up your rights to them. Listen to what they have to say:

Guilt: “It’s mine! I rule your mind simply by hitting the rewind button, flashing images of fear that cause you pain. I project myself on to anyone who even remotely reminds you of your perceived errors. Once your stomach tightens, your fists clench, and your nightmares cast their shadows, I know that I’m in command!”

Anxiety: “I hit fast forward and blare the sirens.  The signposts I look for are sleeplessness, anger and outbursts. I scream at you to judge anyone who triggers your pain. Attack first, fast and furiously! That’s my motto. As soon as your blood pressure soars, I claim my rightful place on the Throne of Control. It’s all about FEAR, baby!’’

You do realize, don’t you know, that you have Inner Wisdom sitting in the wings, simply awaiting your invitation to take up full-time residence?

Wait. Why are you still looking down that dark hallway? Turn this way, toward the Light. That’s right. Simply call out to Spirit, ‘I choose to have You rule my mind.’

Quiet now. Sh-h-h-h-h-h-h. What do you hear?

Static? Hm-m-m. Be still and place your ear up to His door. Anything?

Ah-ha, there you go. That’s right. What do you hear now? Silence? That’s called Peace. Go ahead, open the door and tell me what you see.

Yes, I’m smiling, too. It’s nice to see that serene expression on your face. And you’re glowing. The Light from within has surrounded and engulfed you. Such joy. Such innocence.

You wear it well, My Love.

Letter from Anastasia

Below is a letter from Anastasia, a student of A Course in Miracles, who has been in prison for the past fourteen years:

Dear Joe Wolfe, from Spirit Light Outreach,

I write in infinite Love and gratitude for the gift of your book, The End of Reincarnation with The Five Signs. I thoroughly enjoyed your writing style and down to earth conversational tone.

I must share a story with you.

I have been incarcerated for over 14 years for a crime that took the life of the man who abused me and my child. The horrors I once endured and of my crime are beyond measure and I choose to no longer focus on the negative…

I am pending release via “change of commitment modification.” Please keep me in your prayers for the Highest Good…

So much of this 14 year journey has brought me to full circle in every sense and in more ways than I can adequately recount. This brings me to your work.

I spent almost two years in the county jail, pending my trial. I was ‘strung out’ on psych meds via the ‘systems’ way of incapacitating me — legal chemical restraint.

It was a bleak and horrific time, yet [it was also] the beginning of my transformation. A jail house minister named Jeanie Wentzel came to visit me frequently. She kept referring to A Course in Miracles and how it had changed her life.

Early on in my jail stay, I asked my family to send me a copy [of A Course in Miracles] which they did, and I began to study it. Three months into my time my sickness worsened and I was deemed ‘incompetent to stand trial’ and shipped off to a state psych hospital for several months. This is where I was originally prescribed a boat load of meds and eventually incapacitated by them.

I remember the impact A Course in Miracles had on me… yet I feel that, at that time, it filed itself away in the archives of my subconscious.

The next two years were ugly for me and coming to prison with an ungodly sentence, I resolved to take my [own] life, once and for all. [I was determined to kill myself.]

But God had other plans for me. She always does… smiling… On the day and hour that I had planned to follow through with my plan [to kill myself] I distinctly heard the Voice and had a vision that showed me All that Was, Is and ever will Be….

Although this was not the first spiritual experience or encounter in my life, I have had many experiences like the many things you describe in your book since I was a child. I would love to share them with you in time if you like.

This was the one that truly opened my eyes and changed my life. Everything A Course in Miracles said became clear to me. I vowed to re-create myself and my life.

I began practicing the principals and studying….I went back to school (prisoner correspondence school) and earned my BA in psychology. I “healed” myself… mind, body and soul… and within the next year or two others took notice of my changes. More people than I can count came to me, morning, noon and night, for help and guidance. I began to ‘see’ others shifting and changing for the better through what I was able to share.

What I do today amazes me! It is far too much to write in a mere letter. Synchronicity is a daily occurrence. Spirit speaks to me always and through everyone and everything!

I have learned to listen and follow… and nothing but Miracles have resulted! I asked Spirit to guide me and asked, “What do I now need?”

My eyes instantly fell [on the pages of your newsletter] the title of your book. Not knowing anything about you or of your work, I wrote to request it.

The first coincidence is the fact that your [address] is a mere couple of blocks from an apartment [where I lived.] So imagine my surprise to receive your book and read it, only to find out that much of what you say is based on A Course in Miracles... which was the original book I read and studied! I have read it daily ever since, knowing why I was directed to them, full circle…..

I have only scratched the surface with you and on what I could share of my experiences and future intentions. I hope that you will remain in contact with me and perhaps some day soon, we will meet and work together in some fashion.

Thank you, Joe, for sharing yourself and your work. You are not alone in your quest. I hope that this begins a friendship and future work endeavors to continue spreading the message of Love and helping others in need. Blessed Be.

Enough Is Enough

Ah, such energy and straining spent
to deny, to push away,
what is undeniable.
Pulling, pushing, yearning
plotting, plodding on, scheming,
all the while pretending that
love is nowhere,
that suffering is real,
that I am alone and loveless.

How many lifetimes,
how many futile clay bodies
have I endured to taste
the delicious, addictive
pain of guilt?
It matters not,
for awakening is assured.
The sleeping child is waking
from the dream.

Unfathomable, is it not, that
the wondrous, endlessly expansive,
comforting, magnificent glow
of God Himself,
Who perfectly sculpted me
from Eternal Love,
is somehow obscured
from my awareness?
Such arrogance is this;
to wear the cloak of
doubt and fear and chaos,
to shield the Great Rays
of God from view.
No matter, this silly game
can be easily laid aside
when I’ve decided enough is enough.

And so, dear ones,
who share this dream with me,
I declare to you; enough is enough.
You, who feel tiny
while being boundless,
Let us return to the endless joy
of our Home, hand in hand,
leaving no fear and frightful
dreams to disturb our sinless,
perfect, lovely One Self.

Forgiveness Is Our Only Function

Workbook Lessons 121 and 122 state: “Forgiveness is the key to happiness” and “Forgiveness offers everything I want.” I had an experience I would like to share that demonstrates the truth of these two lessons.

I received a call for help. The woman said she was feeling anxious and depressed. I told her that I wasn’t a therapist and if she was that depressed, I suggested she receive professional help that I was not qualified to give. However, she was resistant to going to a psychologist or a psychiatrist and since she denied having suicidal thoughts, I thought I could offer her support through working with ACIM. She said she wanted to get back to the Course and believed that would help relieve her problems as it did in the past.

However, after a few weeks of her calling me several times a day, I became shaken and felt overwhelmed. I was guided to call a minister whom I respected who told me she had a similar situation and had to release her student after suggesting professional help. After talking with this Minister, I felt at peace.

I also asked Holy Spirit to help me with what to say to the woman. However, it wasn’t long after that the ego reared it’s fearful and guilty thoughts and told me: “How can you abandon her; she is calling for love; what kind of minister are you?” And, I fell for this egoic message.

From a place of guilt and fear, I continued to receive her calls and share Course material with her. I also continued to suggest professional counseling. But the calls for help increased and so did her anxiety and mine. I couldn’t sleep because I felt so guilty thinking she would be abandoned if I didn’t continue to work with her.

I continued to go to Spirit, but I was in such fear and guilt that I couldn’t really receive Spirit’s message. But the thought came up to offer this woman an Accessing Inner Wisdom Counseling session that Pathways of Light ministers are trained in and it doesn’t take the place of professional therapy.

She agreed and during the session it came out several times that she wished she were dead. Then I knew I was over my head and I couldn’t help her. I was also guided to ask another minister who was a professional psychologist for her professional opinion. She also agreed that this woman needed professional help I wasn’t equipped to give.

Again, I felt so shook up and the feelings of guilt and believing I would abandon her came up. Then, I knew, these feelings weren’t about her. There was something in me that needed to be healed. Her story was triggering fear in me and this is what I took to Holy Spirit for forgiveness.

During the night, I was awakened with a memory of a time I was also very severely depressed and kept calling a dear friend for help and support. I too, was afraid to seek professional help.

I grew up in a home with a father who was diagnosed with manic depression and kept telling me I was crazy and belonged in mental institution. My friend eventually told me she couldn’t continue to talk with me because she was also getting triggered with fear as she grew up with a mom who was committed to a psychiatric hospital.

At the time, I felt so guilty for feeling so depressed and the effects it was having on my family. I felt frightened that if I sought professional help, I would be committed. I felt betrayed and abandoned by my friend. All this fear and guilt was coming up for forgiveness of Linda’s story around mental illness, and belief she was alone and abandoned.

Holy Spirit reminded her that everyone in the story, who were all really aspects of herself, were all innocent, including this woman who was calling for love, like I had. And God answers every call for love with Love.
In my situation, I did go for professional help and a breakdown led to a break-through and finding ACIM. The Course helped me realize that all illness is a form of mental illness because it is coming from the belief that we separated from our Source of Love and from this comes feelings of abandonment, fear and guilt.

I also was asked to look at my motivation. If I’m answering a call for Love out of fear and guilt, this is not really extending love. It’s only ego’s way of making it feel better by believing it is fixing someone else. So, now I am learning that before I answer a call for Love, if I’m coming from fear, that’s the clue to take it to Holy Spirit because there is something that needs forgiveness. “Forgiveness offers everything I want;” Forgiveness is the Key to Happiness.” (W-pI.121,122)

Holy Spirit also led me to Chapter 28 (The Undoing of Fear) Section IV: The Greater Joining. In paragraph 1 it states:

“Accepting the Atonement for yourself means not to give support to someone’s dream of sickness and of death.” (1)

“Unless you help him, you will suffer pain with him because that is your wish.” (6)

”And you become a figure in his dream of pain, as he in yours.” (7) …”for you share in dreams of fear.” (10)

Because I hadn’t forgiven myself for my own fears and guilt about depression, I was being sucked into this woman’s dream story.

After working on forgiveness with Holy Spirit, I awoke in such peace and felt free. 

Soon after, the woman called me again and I gently told her that I just wasn’t qualified to help her, especially from a long distance and that I gave her resources where she could seek some professional help. I also sent her resources and phone numbers listing all the places in her County where she could get help. I hung up the phone and this time there was no guilt or fear. I trusted she is under Holy Spirit’s Care and will be guided for her highest good and healing. I put her in the Light and saw her as Innocent and Whole.

That evening, I received a text from her thanking me for my help and support.

Thank you Holy Spirit for Your help, support and Love. “There is no love but God’s.” (WB lesson 127)
