Seeing Past the Illusion

Over the past week I have been communicating with an old friend, a woman whom I was close to when I was in my 20’s. We were discussing our first marriages and the heartache we felt when the marriages ended. In the past I would have felt a little bitter and victimized, but today I don’t feel that way at all. I feel only compassion for the men who left us. I understand that they were feeling there own sense of lack. My first husband was killed in a car accident shortly after we divorced and I had just married my present husband. He never got to spend time with his only son.

I know he is basking in the Love of God now and is able to feel God’s perfect Love. There is no lack in God. We forget this from the perspective of the body because of an ancient feeling of guilt and remorse and separation. I Love remembering that we are not the body, we are pure Love. It makes me see my brother differently now. There is no emptiness in me there is only joy, peace and Love.

When I focused on being a victim, I felt I lacked something. That I was somehow unlovable. I tried to stuff those feelings down with food and criticism of others and myself and that led to more separation.

I have been thinking a lot about trust lately. From the perspective of my ego I would have thought, “How can I trust others when I have clearly seen what others are capable of?” Then when I read my lesson for the day it said on the lesson comments that comes to my e-mail from # 201, “In this world it seems impossible to trust anyone…  The reason we feel we cannot trust anyone is because the trust is misplaced. Of course we cannot trust an illusion, they can shift and change.” So as long as we see each other as a body and separate from God, it isn’t possible to trust. But when we begin to see that each of us is an extension of God, Ray’s of pure Love and Light, beautiful in every way, there is no place for any other belief.

I am so happy now seeing past the illusion that my ego created. When we learn the truth, it is such a relief to realize that we are all free to see the Light in each other and to have compassion for those who are blind. As we gain our sight and see through the illusion with our compassion and Love and non judgement, we create a safe place for our brothers to see through it also. This is how we heal together. We drop the thought that we are separate so we see past the illusion to our true nature.

I Seek A Future Different from the Past

With ACIM Workbook Lesson 314, it is really important to pause after each sentence: From new perception of the world there comes a future very different from the past. (1)

The willingness to watch the thought process and take everything that is not loving to the Holy Spirit to be changed, brings about transformation. But this work needs to be done!

The future now is recognized as but extension of the present. (2)

How strong is that belief that my past story influences the rest of my life! I was born in Germany in 1944, therefore I often claim that being born at the end of the war had such an influence and I am stuck with this influence. 

Past mistakes can cast no shadows on it, so that fear has lost its idols and its images, and being formless, it has no effects. (3) 

This is all about true forgiveness or releasing the past. Jesus/Jeshua is one of the great teachers of this process. In ACIM, The Way of Mastery, and the Aramaic Beatitudes he leads the student through many processes to help him/her let go of all that baggage.

Death will not claim the future now, for life is now its goal, and all the needed means are happily provided. (4)

Doesn’t this make you gasp? ‘Death will not claim the future now!’ Living in a retirement village with many very old people around me, death is at the doorsteps! But already in the New Testament Jesus is saying that he has come to give life eternal. He is taking our gaze away from the body/mind personality we still identify so strongly with, to our spiritual eternal being.

“Who can grieve or suffer when the present has been freed, extending its security and peace into a quiet future filled with joy?” (5)

“Father, we were mistaken in the past and choose to use the present to be free. Now do we leave the future in Your Hands, leaving behind our past mistakes, and sure that You will keep Your present promises, and guide the future in their holy light.” (2:1-2)  AMEN 

P.S. Let us remember that we are not the maker and the doer, God IS! By knowing of our unbreakable connection with the divine, we can let go of past mistaken beliefs which run our present miseries and be free.

A Holy Instant at the End of the Healing Inner Child Program

Several times a year I offer the Healing Inner Child 8-Week Program. This time around I only had two takers, even though many told me they would want to participate. So, I continued anyway with only two people, a man and a young woman. Then the woman could not come any more for personal reasons, and so I continued with the man.

During the last lesson, there is a group activity of ‘Nurturing the Needy Inner Child.’ The meeting before this, we had made wonderful progress, and he had insights into a feeling he had had all of his life when he was just a little one in the crib.  This experience pretty much took care of his childhood obstacles since he had done quite a bit of personal work before. So during this last activity, I asked him to write down what his immature self wanted to hear, since he could no longer identify with ‘the needy child within.’ He wrote about half a page of desires he had and which he wanted to experience in his life.

To make this more of a ‘group’ experience, I also wrote some notes on what my little girl wanted, and so we repeated these things to each other in a loving, supportive and nurturing way. He was very receptive to my wording of what he wanted and I saw that, in some way, he already had quite a bit of what he had written down.

But my surprise came when he gave back to me what I had written down. These few desires of my little girl were translated by him into what I had given him during these eight lessons, and he touched me deeply with his insights and his genuine reflections. We touched on a very deep level, I would say it was a pure Spirit level, a holy instant. I was surprised at how deep this connection went. There was another surprise in this: The ego immediately rejected what I had experienced as ‘losing myself,’ giving in or a similarly negative feeling. Fortunately, I recognized that it was the ego who decided that I should not take this feeling as what it really was — a wonderful experience of a holy relationship, playfully expressed and deeply felt by both of us.

What a gift that was! I am still amazed at the depth of this holy encounter that was so unexpected.

The Course says: “Look on your holy brother, sinless as yourself, and let him lead you there.”  (T-22.II.13:7) and…

“This is the function of your holy relationship. For what one thinks, the other will experience with him. What can this mean except your mind and your brother’s are one? Look not with fear upon this happy fact, and think not that it lays a heavy burden on you. For when you have accepted it with gladness, you will realize that your relationship is a reflection of the union of the Creator and His Son. From loving minds there is no separation. And every thought in one brings gladness to the other because they are the same. Joy is unlimited, because each shining thought of love extends its being, and creates more of itself.” (T-22.VI.14:1-8)

Winter Incubating

Hiking the mountain trails around my home, I am reminded that winter is quickly coming. The sun is sitting lower in the sky. Her warming light retreats earlier each day. Chilly darkness moves in for longer and longer nights. Fall’s yellow and gold colors are gone. Stalks topped with their dried flowers remain, fragile against ice-tinged air.

In the stillness of cold and clouds and grey, I sometimes hear myself thinking it feels lonely; that I feel lonely in the silence of winter. I talk to this feeling. I want to know what it is trying to tell me. I believe this feeling is in me because a part of my mind is living in separation from the truth of what I am.

I soften around this lonely feeling, letting it just be in me, without judging or criticizing it… and I learn from it. I receive images of myself as a very young girl, feeling lost and alone in my life. I see a young me — scared, confused, insecure, angry — not knowing how to understand her feelings.

Here, in the present moment, I take the time to breathe… I breathe into the feelings and images, slowly and gently deep into my belly, letting my body know I am safe…

Then, I mindfully invite my Inner Wisdom into my breath, into the memories, the images, the feelings. I let go of controlling what I see or feel and continue breathing.

A new image comes… I see a seedling in soil. One seed, alone, surrounded in darkness and moist in the supportive damp earth. I let this image fill my mind… I sense that the seed knows sunlight and warmth and spring and summer and fall breezes are all just above her, waiting for her… The seed is joyous, trusting in what awaits, and completely content just where she is…

The seedling is content because she knows she needs the wintery stillness, the inward focus, to germinate into a spring sprout… She knows that time beneath the soil builds her for blooming big and bright throughout summer… Incubating in winter fortifies her for the coming luscious sunlight, the quenching rains and the delightful seasonal breezes… 

As this image closes, my Inner Wisdom continues communicating with me. I receive a deep knowing of these words — Sit still and quiet this winter, stiller and quieter than I ever have before… Be with the feelings and images. A healing awaits just beneath them, a healing that will teach me I am never alone. I am free of the past. I am free to be peace and love and joy. I am free to love myself, unconditionally. 

I trust this guidance from my Inner Wisdom; guidance telling me that a lonely feeling or a sad memory is just another form of forgetting what I AM. Because in truth I AM all wholeness, total peace, and complete love in every moment — if I but choose to accept it. And so, here I go, into my winter incubation to remember who I AM, yet again.

Ahhh… Winter!
