A Lesson in Love

by Rev. Rebecca Brown, O.M.C.

Rev. Rebecca BrownWhen I moved to Florida a little over a year and a half ago, I moved into a low socioeconomic neighborhood, where it soon became apparent that alcoholism was prevalent. Although I know that this disease transcends all socioeconomic levels, it seemed to be higher here. I suspect that is the result of the depression associated with the unemployment and low incomes that exist here.

I was somewhat dismayed by this as I felt that I had more than my share of relationships with active alcoholics who had hurt me, both in my family and with my intimate partners. I was determined to remain polite but distant from my neighbors. One of my neighbors, about my age whom I shall call Francesca, made several attempts to befriend me but I would not relinquish my judgment about getting too involved, so I remained distant.

About six months ago, she sent me a card and I began to open up more to her. I asked her over for Thanksgiving but was told by her partner that she was in very bad pain and was unable to come. She spent the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas staying indoors due to severe pain in her abdomen. I invited her again at Christmas but she was still unable to come as she was having a great deal of difficulty walking.

During early February, she was forced to see her doctor (I am not sure if it was fear or lack of insurance or both that prevented her from going for help sooner), and she was admitted to the hospital after being told she had only had forty days to live. She found out she had cancer and it had spread to virtually every organ in her body, including her brain, which had several tumors.

Francesca passed away this week while being cared for in a hospice. Her long–term partner told me that she spent the last few weeks asleep and that she was able to transcend this realm and into the arms of our Father peacefully. I asked her partner if there was going to be any type of memorial service for her and was told there was not going to be one. He said her family lives several thousand miles away and she simply was going to be cremated with no one there to commemorate her life. I felt devastated, as did my family.

Every being contributes equally to this world and should be recognized for that contribution. I know she taught me a great deal about innocence and love. She had always been humble and gentle, even when I refused to let go of my own judgments about her drinking behaviors. I’m not sure she ever knew why I stayed so far away, and if she did, I hope she was able to forgive me for it, as I am learning to forgive myself for allowing my fear to get into the way of expressing the unconditional love we both held within our hearts.

Whatever may have happened in the years she journeyed here, one thing is for certain; she was one of my greatest teachers, whom I deeply love and will always remember, someone who unknowingly assisted in healing me. I thank her for her life, her love, and for her great courage and I thank the Holy Spirit for that holy relationship. I have grown immeasurably from it.

Problems

by Rev. Veronika Wilcox, O.M.C.

Rev. Veronika WilcoxI woke at midnight and couldn’t go back to sleep. Some problem weighed on me. I got up to try to solve it by sending an e-mail inquiry off. I then wrote down all that bothered me, turning it over to the Holy Spirit. It came to me to read the lesson of the day from ACIM, number 79, “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved.” I read every word slowly and carefully, taking in the reminder that the only problem was that I believed that I was separated from my Creator. Well, I nodded my head like a good student, but at the moment I couldn’t quite agree with it. Back to my writing again with questions to the Holy Spirit. When I was done, the only answer I received was to go back to sleep and leave all my concerns to Him.

I went back to bed, but sleep was as far from me as the East is from the West. Then it came to me to listen to one of my favorite tracks from the POL course 905: Special Relationships vs. Holy Relationships. I put the CD on, lay back and listened. Soon the image of me trying to pull a heavy bag uphill arose. I could hardly manage because the bag seemed to have a will of its own, for it felt as if it was trying to pull me downhill. If I was to let go, it would go out of my sight and be gone. I couldn’t do that! This bag full of problems was very important to me. It seemed like I was hypnotized by it.

Well, I reached the bench in the shade, as described by the voice in the meditation. When I sat down, I had to tie the bag down at the bench because its energy was so great. I sighed and invited the Holy Spirit into my mind. I was truly willing to be helped to let go of that bag. I knew that was all I needed to do. I didn’t even have to look inside to see all the nothingness I call my problems. As I started to feel the peace of the presence of the Holy Spirit in me, I just untied the bag and it slid out of sight immediately. I was free. It was that simple.

I felt so light. It was wonderful. I went back to sleep and when I woke, I still felt that same lightness and the clear realization that I was indeed the maker of all my problems and yes, Jesus was right, the answer to all my perceived problems was already given, namely that I was never separated from the Holy Spirit, which is the Voice of God in me. Amen.

Choosing the Way to Heaven

by Rev. Hazel Allen, O.M.C.

Rev. Hazel AllenHoly Spirit take the wheel.
I am on my own when
I try to do Your work,
I fired myself and hired you.
Now I can acheive anything
I need to do,
and that my dear Creator,
is doing Your work.
I feel at peace today,
because that is what You have given me.

Letting Holy Spirit Solve All ‘Problems’

by Revs. Robert & Mary Stoelting

Robert & Mary StoeltingMary: Our lessons continue to be centered around the theme of stepping back with everything and letting Holy Spirit take charge of our thoughts regarding every situation we encounter.

When we forget and think we know how to decide on our own, peace disappears and so again we attract another lesson to ‘choose once again.’

In Lesson 151 we are reminded, “How can you judge? Your judgment rests upon the witness that your senses offer you. Yet witness never falser was than this. But how else do you judge the world you see? You place pathetic faith in what your eyes and ears report. You think your fingers touch reality, and close upon the truth. This is awareness that you understand, and think more real than what is witnessed to by the eternal Voice for God Himself.” (W-pI.151.3)

Reinforcing this reminder gives us the opportunity to step back into a place of quiet and let our minds be purified of the false ideas we have brought from the past. We are reminded that we don’t know how to judge. We are reminded once again to forgive or let go of all we thought we knew about anything in the world.

To help us awaken to the truth we are told, “Give Him your thoughts, and He will give them back as miracles which joyously proclaim the wholeness and the happiness God wills His Son, as proof of His eternal Love. And as each thought is thus transformed, it takes on healing power from the Mind Which saw the truth in it, and failed to be deceived by what was falsely added.” (14:1-2)

So we are learning that our real job is to observe what we are thinking and hand these thoughts over to let Holy Spirit be the judge. We are to be as little children. We are not the authority, for on our own we really know nothing. With Holy Spirit as the judge, we see innocence instead of guilt. We are lifted up past time to the eternal truth that we all are still pure Love and we cannot leave God’s oneness.

As we continue our practice of pausing and letting Holy Spirit be the judge, we see the many blessings that are returned to us and we feel grateful. “As we give thanks, the world unites with us and happily accepts our holy thoughts, which Heaven has corrected and made pure. Now has our ministry begun at last, to carry round the world the joyous news that truth has no illusions, and the peace of God, through us, belongs to everyone.” (17:2-3)

Letting Holy Spirit be the judge provides us all the answers to everything we need, today and every day.

In Quietness Is Every Problem Quietly Resolved

Robert: While I was setting up a page on the Pathways of Light website recently, I had a happy lesson in the value of letting Holy Spirit lead the way. I wanted to align two elements on the page. I had tried a couple of times, but they didn’t work. My focus had been to get one part to move in relation to the part above it.

I’ve been practicing being mindful of when I start efforting — trying to make something work. I realized that I had fallen back into that old pattern, so I sat back, took a deep breath and expressed a willingness to follow. The thought came to set it aside for the moment. It would fall into place later. A few minutes later a thought came into my mind how I could adjust the upper part. I tried it and bingo, perfect alignment!

I believe that the Holy Spirit will guide us in even these little worldly details because He sees every circumstance as a teaching opportunity. As I efforted to try to make it work, I was not at peace. By stepping back, taking a breath and letting peace return to my mind, I received a great demonstration that, “In quietness are all things answered, and is every problem quietly resolved.” (T-27.IV.1:1)
