Take One for Humanity

Take one for humanity: This lifestyle choice became a mantra to me when I saw myself getting competitive or anxious if I didn’t get the ideal parking space or found myself making negative assumptions if a person jumped in front of me to get in a line. I had to ask myself: Why is this “winning” more important than peace and connection to humanity?

I started to make it a habit to let another driver take a parking space if it was a toss-up as to who was there first. Or joyfully opt to let a car get on the freeway when merging instead of blocking them out just so I am ahead on the road. I even found myself mentally extending a gesture of “please go first” while driving and then I self-talked myself through the thought that I can give this gift to humanity and reap the benefits of calm and peace.

Take one for humanity also helped me give grace in considering that the other person may be in a hurry for an emergency or trying to cope with their own personal worries. I also like to think of these choices as kindness, as I once heard an idea that kindness means we do an act without any expectation of reward or compensation, just being kind for the peace and joy of kindness itself.

Whenever I have chosen this path, I have been profoundly surprised and rewarded with joy, peace and contentment! The surprise is that when I choose a kind path of taking one for the team of humanity, the response can be a domino effect of kindness and surprised joy in return, as a kind act is not always expected from a stranger or when the person is hidden by the safety and anonymity of their car windows.

Extending a simple gift of relinquishing a parking space or a place in a line can create a connection and thread of Love uniting us as One. Often when looking for an act of kindness or love but not expecting it to happen, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder takes over leading to memories of getting a negative response, being bullied, or holding on to a belief system that everyone is just out for themselves. 

What a refreshing reset to be the person to model a different behavior for the motive of kindness without ego or reciprocation as a goal. Could this kindness create a domino effect or new thinking patterns in being a role model in passing the gift of humanity and kindness on to others to pay it forward throughout the day?

Even if the person does not respond, my experience has been that my own mind and body get a benefit of peace and positive thoughts that can move me forward in my day in a calm mindset that provides a domino effect for myself in every situation I encounter.

I proceed in my day with the inner glow of light as taught by Pathways of Light that I can pass to others as a torch of light to all I encounter. It is refreshing and healing for me to look for opportunities to extend a simple act of kindness as these moments can present themselves all throughout the day. Now it is not only an idea, but it has grown into a habit that I carry with me every moment!
