Book Review — Live Your Happy

Holy Spirit, I ask for your help and inspiration as I put into words how much I appreciate this wonderfully written book by Rev. Maria Felipe, Live Your Happy.

As a fairly new student of A Course in Miracles and support person for Pathways of Light, this book has made a perfectly timed (by Holy Spirit) and significant tool for my studies of the Course. I have read through the book a few times now and use it in a study group. Maria makes it very interesting and practical with her personal stories. Every page has a beautiful gift for the reader. Maria’s sense of humor comes through in a sparkling way. We have never met or spoken; however, I can feel that her fun and loving personality would be contagious.

I would like to thank Maria for the guidance and inspiration I received from reading Live Your Happy. I have started the facilitated courses offered by Pathways of Light and feel I now have a stronger connection to the Course Study and Ministerial Training Program.

Lastly, I would like to recommend this book to everyone, including new students and those who have been following the Course for years.

Thank you again for allowing me to share my gratitude for this mind-healing tool – Live Your Happy!

Why Allowing = Taking Action

Do you have a problem that you think about all the time? As soon as you wake up and while brushing your teeth, driving to work, having lunch and dinner, and finally lying awake in bed when you should be sleeping?

Rather than coming up with a solution, all you’re doing is reviewing the same worries over and over:

How did I get into this?

Why is this happening to me?

Why won’t this person do what I want?

What if I do this or that?

What if I say this or that?

STOP FIXING THE PROBLEM

Compulsive worrying means that you believe your problems are very real (what I call “big deals”), and there really is no solution. You’re depending on the wrong advisor in your own head; as the Course reminds us, “The ego’s rule is, ‘Seek and do not find.’” As long as you’re listening to the ego’s advice, you’re going to worry about the same stuff over and over again. And worry is just another way of telling yourself. This is the way it has to be. I need to worry. I need to suffer. I need to be unhappy. If you believe in the nonsense of the ego, you end up being fooled!

4 STEPS — HOW TO TAKE INSPIRED ACTION

Rather than fixing the problem & finding a solution, let spirit guide you in taking INSPIRED ACTION

To get unstuck from the same old problems, and to change your thoughts, it would be helpful to do these three things:

Recognize there is really only one problem: that you believe you separated from God (not true!)

1. Say no mas (“no more!”) to compulsive worry / thoughts of the ego

2. Listen to the voice within & take happy thoughts in the place of worried thoughts — even if you don’t want to!

3. Align your next action with your higher self / God — it will show you the way.

HOW TO KNOW YOU’RE TAKING INSPIRED ACTION

You get an impulse and idea to do something (usually comes from a heart-centered space).

The action steps just make sense. You don’t have to justify them, they just feel right.

Feel energized by the action — it doesn’t seem like “work.” You’re enjoying the process

Make a lot of progress very quickly and with little effort.

Your action is just one piece of the puzzle.

You don’t have to control everything.

The Goal of the Owls

One of the great blessings in my life has been to be a coach of the Lynbrook Owls varsity lacrosse team. I now serve as a volunteer assistant coach on a lacrosse program with which I have been involved for 45 consecutive years. In 2008 I turned over the head coaching duties to my friend and colleague who had been my assistant for many years.

I certainly have a great deal of experience coaching high school boys in several sports since 1972. My role, however, has radically changed. It is simple but significant. I help the players and coaches to focus on the Shakti.

Lacrosse teams at Lynbrook High School have had very successful seasons for decades. The lacrosse alumni continue to speak of the brotherhood that connects them long after they graduate. The goal of the coaching staff has been to get the players to believe in the Shakti — the connecting energy that unites us as brothers.

Shakti, of course, is a Sanskrit word. It could be described in the Hindu spiritual path of Vedanta as “the creative energy of the Universe.” To the Owls lacrosse team, the Shakti represents the power of our minds to connect to each other through our hearts. We expect to play well when we connect this way.

At the conclusion of every practice and every game one of the Lynbrook coaches will pull all the players closely together and ask, “What’s my job?” The boys answer loudly in unison, “To love us.”

The coach then asks, “What’s your job?” And again together they say, “To love each other.”

Lastly he says, “What are we?” And they all strongly reply, “Brothers.”

The players are reminded every day that the goal of the team is much bigger than just winning championships. Our goal is to build the Shakti — the energy of the love of brothers — to the highest level.

Everyone wants to win. Our team competes for a championship almost every season. And our former players from the past seasons will attest that it is the loving connection — the Shakti — that has been our goal and spurred our success.

This year’s team was supposed to be void of talent at the season’s beginning. Some considered it to be perhaps the poorest Owl squad that they could ever remember. We took our lumps early but somehow made our way into the playoffs.

Our Shakti connection has gotten stronger. We have beaten two teams in the post-season that defeated us during the year and will be facing the defending New York State champions in the county finals tomorrow night. Nevertheless, our goal remains the same. We will build a strong flow of Shakti from one player to another through their hearts. We expect to play well.

If the players believe in the power that connects them as brothers, the score really doesn’t matter. But we will certainly enjoy the competition with this uniquely positive attitude. In truth, it’s always a win when the entire team focuses on the Shakti, no matter what the score is.

The Need to Know

I find that my mind really has a hard time letting go of the need to know answers.  My mind prefers to have a step-by-step playbook for how things should be moving forward and it experiences suffering when I don’t have one to follow.

I am at the stage in my awareness where I fundamentally understand the “idea” that I Am Spirit, that I have a mind but I am not the mind, but I still get pretty easily pulled back into identification with my mind.

I am aware of a feeling of a sort of low level anxiety that is ever present in the background of all that is my mind and body. A cloud of sorts and it’s a bit heavy. Not so heavy that I can’t walk or move through my day but there none the less.

I realize that it’s definitely time for me to practice “Being” the peace that I wish to experience. So I draw in a deep breath and gently explain to my mind…

Thank you mind, for all that you have done for me throughout the years.

It must not have been easy to manage the life of Michelle without sound leadership and direction from the ever present Spirit, which I Am.

I have come to understand that you have been like a child needing direction but lacking it and so you have absorbed various impressions and ideas from others over the years in an attempt to “figure it out” on your own.

You have felt alone in the process, somehow aware that there was something that you were lacking, but not sure what that something was.

You have looked here and there, to lovers and friends, and family for the guidance that you desperately wanted and needed, as the weight of decision-making in solitude seemed more and more painful.

You beautiful sensitive loving mind, in need of a hug, I am here now.

No matter how long it takes, we now get to work together, gently transferring the leadership of Michelle’s life so that you can relax and be in joy while I, the Spirit, take over and provide leadership.

I am the Voice for God and my leadership ensures that God’s will be done!

It’s so simple really, but after so many years of leaving you alone, I promise to be gentle and lovingly persistent as we make the transition together.

You were never meant to be the “leader” of Michelle, you are an amazing tool, the intellect, designed to be used lovingly by Spirit and for the benefit of All through this life experience. Going forward, this is how we shall work together.

Circumstances will occur; you and therefore the body shall remain as quiet and peaceful as possible; allowing Me, the Spirit, to discern what to do in each situation.

Once I understand the loving response to the circumstance, you will instantly also know, and with all of your wondrous intellect and capabilities you shall direct the body accordingly.

This is the only Step-by-Step plan you will ever need. I am here, I love you, All is well.
