Love Heals

I do not believe that time heals all wounds. But I do believe that Love does. There are practical applications of ACIM for which I am grateful. Above all others, I am drawn to the concept that only the Love is real in any situation.

In this world, losing a child is considered one of the worst human experiences some must endure. It has been just over a year since I lost my son, Kevin. Some told me that one does not ever recover from such an experience. I could be expected to have great difficulty just being able to get out of bed in the morning. Some people believe in their role of being the victim of such a tragedy. It defines the rest of their lives. They don’t believe they can recover to live happily — and so they don’t.

“I am not a victim of the world I see.” (W-31) “There is another way of looking at this.” (W-33) These ACIM Workbook lessons are affirmations that tell me to change my mind about the world. I understand that losing my son, Kevin, to the insidious grip of heroin after many years of recovery and relapse is a terrible nightmare within this “dream” of living in separate bodies. But this is where the principles of ACIM take on practical application while I am having this human experience.

None of the nightmare with Kevin was real. All of the love that we shared during his 27 years was. There is no death. Kevin’s Spirit is eternal — part of the Oneness. The Spirit was never born nor can it ever die. Only the Love we share is truly real in the human experience. All the rest is illusion.

Believing in the concepts and principles of ACIM has given me great strength in dealing with such a senseless loss. We all need that strength to live in this world happily. We need to accept that each of us is the sinless, guiltless Child of God. We are dreaming the ego’s dream but we have a path to awaken. “I could see peace instead of this.” (W-34)

I am willing to turn my ego thoughts over to Spirit and allow Him to be in charge. With trust in Him, I can learn to live in gratitude for all the love that continues to come my way. Without this trust, I would not be able to experience and enjoy the love. I would not be able to recognize it because I had chosen to listen to the wrong teacher.

“God’s answer is some form of peace. All pain is healed; all misery replaced with joy. All prison doors are opened. And all sin is understood as merely a mistake.” (W-359) I have great gratitude for the lessons I have learned from ACIM. Since only the Love is real, it is where I choose to keep my focus. This is a practical application of living ACIM. It is Love, not time, that heals.
